Adeline
Adeline followed the directions the boy gave, weaving past people along the sidewalk. If she didn't hurry, there might be nothing left of Jack but a few charred bones.
A prickling sensation itched across her back. Convinced someone was following her, she looked over her shoulder. Only a trickle of people hastened about their day. No one even stared her way. Kicking into a hurried walk, she glanced into a shop's windows, catching the reflection of two men sliding out from behind a store's pillar across the street and rushing her way. Why were they coming for her and so fast?
As they crossed the street and up the sidewalk toward her, women snapped their heads around to watch them. One left the man she was walking hand in hand with to dash up to the men, but they smiled and waved her away. Another tripped as she stared at them. Two abandoned a toddler to chase the men. In response, the child wailed, and the women giggled excitedly as the two strangers blew them a kiss.
