Chapter 5

Jan 6th, 2021

Jennie was coming home this year, and Jamie was delighted. It seemed that the sun was brighter, the flowers just a bit more colorful and the air just a tad bit fresher.

With a smile plastered across his face and he a skip in his step he walked - rather bounced - his way to The Groove. Today would mark the day that he and Jennie got to see each other every day once again.

Just like old times, he thought proudly.

Walking into The Groove he greeted a very cheerful Mrs Wentworth and sauntered to their regular booth. He sat down carefully and set his hands on the table.

Patiently he sat and waited for Jennie even though he knew that she would be late, as always but today he didn't mind. He would wait for eternity if it he meant he could see her again.

Jennie stared at her reflection in the mirror. Her normally beaming eyes were quite dull. Her lips were etched into a permanent frown and her thoughts seemed distant.

What was she going to tell Jamie?, she thought dreadfully.

But Jamie was her friend, was he not? Surely he would support her right? Still conflicted on her emotions Jennie got up and headed to The Groove.

Best to get it over and done with.

Jamie had begun to grow worried. It had at least 40 minutes and Jennie still wasn't here. Was she upset about the events of last year?

Had he made a mistake at not coming to their usual one day lunch with each other? It's not like he could make it but he could have still done something special for her.

Jamie took out his phone to call her when she walked through the door looking as ravishing as ever. It seemed as though the older she grew, the more beautiful she would get.

His face fell when he saw that her usual smile was gone and replaced with a frown. Immediately he wanted to kill anyone who would make his Jennie so upset.

Before she could sit he got up and hugged her. This shocked Jennie as Jamie had never initiated the hugs between. It was always her who would hug him first.

She relaxed against him and smiled slightly. The scent of Jamie enveloped her in a cocoon and she sighed. This had always been her safe haven. In Jamie's arms but she was not here to dwell on past feelings. She had to put her foot down.

Jennie's so called plan to put her foot down seemed to be delayed at every possible moment. She kept putting it off for a bit of time later. Eventually they had eaten, talked and had dessert and it was significantly getting late.

She had to catch a flight soon and discussing it on the phone didn't seem ideal. So she blurted it out.

"I'm dating Ashton."

Now this took Jamie by surprise and immediately deflated his happy-go nature of before.

"What?"

"It's been nine months now."

Jamie clenched his jaw and his fist and he felt the anger and jealousy accumulating inside him. It was a white blinding type of anger that made you blackout but he held his emotions back.

"Motherfucking what Jennie?" he seethed.

She flinched at his tone and looked down. Oh well, might as well rip off the rest of the bandaid.

"And I'm flying back for another year so I'm not coming home."

Jamie's heart sunt to the deepest deeps of his stomach. It felt as though someone shot him in the chest with an arrow, yanked his heart out of his chest, put it in a hot iron press and put it back in his chest only to be shot again by the exact same arrow again.

Jennie's eyes were glued to her lap. She was too afraid to look at Jamie, at his reaction, at his anger or disappointment.

"Jennie, look at me."

Reluctantly she did. His face was calm and serene. She hated when he would do this. Act like he wasn't angry and then proceed to take revenge later on.

"Amongst our conversations over the year you really didn't find it necessary to inform me of this."

"I wanted to but I-"

He cut her off swiftly by banging his hand on the table causing her to shut up.

"And on top of that you violated your promise that you made to me two years ago. Do you not feel ashamed of yourself?"

Jennie's brows furrowed in accusation.

"What?"

Jamie smiled sinisterly. He knew what he doing was wrong but Jennie hurt him and and he was hell bent on hurting her too.

So yes... He was petty.

"You know what they call those who promise themselves to one person and move on to another... A goddamn slut."

Jennie recoiled in her seat. Pain spread throughout her chest and tears stung her eyes. Of all people in the world she thought at least Jamie would understand.

Swallowing down her pain she packed up her things and got up out of her seat. Jamie immediately became frantic at her suddenly leaving and said something even if it was wrong.

"Am I wrong?"

She stopped and turned to looked at him in the eyes. So many emotions flew through there but she held back her tears.

"If I remember correctly I confessed my feelings to you years ago but you were too much of a coward to reject me and strung me along on this stupid charade."

"You were the one who was naive enough to think that I would ever love you. You just agreed to it without proper reassurance that I would reciprocate those feelings like a foolish child who couldn't live without me."

'You were the one who was naive enough to think that I would ever love you'. Jamie's words echoed through her mind and cut her heart one thousand times.

A single tear fell down her face and Jamie's heart squeezed in an uncomfortable manner. He hated seeing her cry but before he could say anything she ran out of the diner.

What had he done?
