Chapter 4

Jan 6th, 2020

Jennie was scared.

Not small time typical fear. This was mental institution, crippling anxiety. The kind that made you want to throw yourself in front of a moving bus.

For the first time ever Jennie was confused. Of course she still loved Jamie but then there was also Ashton.

He is sweet, kind, compassionate, always there for and basically the best guy she's met so far. Ever since last year they've gotten closer and she's been pushing Jamie farther away.

Jennie didn't mean to do it intentionally but it just kind of happened. Thier calls got cut down to just two times a month and now she barely know what's going on in his life.

Only just small frequent updates from her mother. Apparently his business is growing well and he seems fine - according to her mother - so she just stopped worrying as much.

She glanced at her phone.

Late, she always is.

She immediately gathered all her stuff and headed to The Groove.

Jamie was sitting at his office desk a hand in his hair. He looked over the paperwork a few times and sighed. He closed the folder and checked the time.

He should really be at the diner by now.

The thought of seeing Jennie again elicited hidden emotions in his heart. Though they didn't really get to talk much this year, he didn't mind since he was so busy with the recent opening of his company.

He grabbed his jacket and was just about to head out when a flustered secretary burst through the door.

"Sir, the shareholders are here."

"What? Why?"

"One of them called an emergency board meeting and are now all here and requesting your presence."

Jamie sighed. He glanced at his clock and groaned. Placing his jacket back on the coat hanger he quickly shot Jennie a text and headed on his way to the boardroom.

Jennie sat staring wide eyed at the empty space across from here.

Why the hell wasn't he here?

He's never late.

And suddenly like a wildfire a dangerous thought crossed her mind. Had something happened?

Should she expect a call from the hospital or something... Or worse the morgue.

Right before her mind could go any further her phone chimed with a message from the one and only missing person of the party.

'Can't come, Gotta work. Happy Birthday.', it read.

Seriously... That's all he has to say? Jennie messaged him back returning the courtesy of the Happy Birthday. She sighed disappointed and got up.

Gotta start packing for my flight later today anyway, she thought grimly before she left The Groove.
