Chapter 68: The other side

Sasuke looked out at the battlefield in front of him, ninja battles were strange, they lasted all but a few minutes yet left a trail of destruction behind them, trees were leveled and the ground destroyed, and bodies littered the battlefield many of which Sasuke himself had killed.

Sasuke looked at his eyes and wondered what the reason for the change was, the Mangekyo Sharingan spun in his eyes, the change was sudden and unexpected, Sasuke guessed that the amount of death that he was seeing and seeing the death of the team that he was assigned to was enough to awaken the Mangekyo, he knew of its existence and had been warned that if he were to ever gain he should use it sparingly as it decreased eyesight, the trade-off was well worth it though as it granted an incredible ability to its user, Sasuke's ability was Amaterasu and his other was the ability to control Amaterasu which made him capable of controlling and forming the flames of Amaterasu into various shapes and forms.

Sasuke's Mangekyo looked like three intersecting ellipses, it also granted him the ability to use the Susanoo the ultimate defense of the Uchiha Clan, when he activated it for the first time it felt as if every cell in his body screamed in pain at the same time, and after a few minutes the chakra strain made him pass out, he was lucky that all enemies nearby had been killed by him or he would've died had Mei not found him lying in a puddle of blood, he also noticed that his vision got a bit worse, the world looked less vibrant, less alive, as if a part of him had died, that day he had learned to appreciate how beautiful the world was, there was a chance he would never see it again, after all.

"Sasuke-san, all enemies have been defeated thanks to your help, if you want we can return to base or advance further, our forces aren't tired yet so we can do a few more skirmishes, the enemies have taken major hits to their strength so taking over their base shouldn't be too difficult, Terumi-sama has taken down Fuji Island so we will soon receive reinforcements, if you wish to wait for that then we should return to base soon, the enemy will most likely try to ambush us, so it is advised that we either attack them before they're ready or that we retreat and wait for reinforcements." A Jonin spoke to him, this was Sasuke's informant and advisor, Sasuke had learned a lot from the man over the course of the two months that they had been here, and Sasuke was thankful to the man as he had saved him from losing his left arm in a battle.

"We will advance, for now, if our forces are too tired after our next battle then we will retreat and wait for Mei-san to arrive, if they still have stamina left over that then we will storm their base and take over," Sasuke replied, the Jonin nodded and went to inform the rest of the forces that Sasuke fought with, altogether they were around 40 ninjas and most were around Chunin to Jonin level, they were the elite forces that were fighting on the frontline, they had already managed to take over 2 islands by themselves, there were three main fighting forces, one commanded by Sasuke, one by Mei and one that was commanded by Chojuro and Ao.

Their job was to gain access to the main island after which they would gather their forces and wait until Naruto managed to cause the civilians and ninjas in Kiri to revolt causing the Mizukage and his forces to be distracted, using that opportunity they would attack and hopefully take down the Mizukage.

Sasuke stood up and sighed, he hoped that Konoha never entered a war, it truly saddened him to see how bad war messed up people and how much destruction it caused, he hoped that this type of destruction never befell Konoha.

Shino looked at the hundreds of scrolls in front of him, they were all messages that families wanted to send to the ninjas that were fighting on the frontline, there was 1 day every month when he would use his communication system to send out messages and would send the replies to the families of the ninja.

Shino did this because he knew what it felt like not to talk to someone that you loved for a long time, he would have loved to be able to send messages to his family each month but that was simply not possible, most of his day was spent improving his communication system and getting messages from one battlefield to another, sending messages home happened at most once a month and even then he wouldn't be able to get a message back, he could only send the Hokage messages and hope that the Hokage would give the messages that he received to his friends and family.

Shino was basically always busy and when he wasn't he was either training or resting, he had been sent out to the battlefield a few times, and every time he had caused mass destruction, but his skills were moreso needed elsewhere so he had been called back to stay in the main base where he could focus on his communication system.

It also took quite a lot of chakra to keep the system up as it consisted of a large number of his insects that sent signals to each other which Shino translated and wrote down, after that he would send the message to one of his clones that had been set up on the battlefields who then translated the message again, this was the easiest way for him to do it as too long-range messages took too much chakra.

But this had caused messages that would take hours to get to their destination to be sent in all but a few minutes which had increased the coordination of the rebel forces and had caused them to gain a significant advantage over the forces of the Mizukage.

All in all the war was going as well as a war could go and they would soon win it, it all depended on how quickly they could take over the islands and how quickly Naruto managed to get the citizens of Kiri to revolt, after which it would only take a bit of time to defeat the Mizukage.
