  “She did not stray,” Rivyn assured her. “It was I that strayed, and she had cause to rescue me. Thank you,” he released me in order to accept the cup of tea Gretha passed to him.

  “A quest, you say?” My father took a seat at Gretha’s side, intrigued despite his disapproval.

  “Indeed,” Rivyn inclined his head. “I apologise for the loss of your horse during my quest, sir, and will send recompense for it and Siorin once we return to the Court of Light.”

  “You’re taking her with you then?” My father was surprised.

  “Of course,” Rivyn arched his brows and blew on his tea. “She is my wife.”

  I did not protest the description, if there was ever a time when a semblance of respectability was needed, it was here, in the front room of my childhood home, with my father and his new wife.

  Anre beamed, pleased for me. “Married, miss?”

  “In the way of the Fae,” Rivyn replied before I needed to come up with a way around the lie. “By the rule of three.”
