  “Am I poisoned?” I wondered, falling back against the pillow.

  “No,” her eyes were gentle. “No, princess. Eat the flat bread, and you will feel better.”

  I ate the bread as instructed and, in time, was able to get up and dress. I felt as if I had not slept, my eyes heavy and sore. “I am unwell, Ashara,” I told her, lying back upon the bed.

  “It will pass, Princess,” she assured me. “Rest a little and then we’ll do your hair.” She left me on the bed and stepped into the other chamber. “We’ll have to leave the bucket by the bed and be faster in the morning with the tisane.”

  If Mesandre replied, I missed it, as I fell back to sleep. I woke when Ashara entered. “Princess,” she said to me softly. “I have some breakfast for you and then we’re ready to continue on.”
