Chapter 411 ( Surviving - II )

"I think we'd better get on with this surviving thing" - Houki muttered as she took a breath in order to gather what little energy she had left.

"You can always get some rest while I take care of this" - said Tatenashi with a smile as she firmly gripped her spear - "According to my calculations, I can give you 5 minutes of rest so that you can gather enough energy to be able to fight"

"Ok, I'll take your word for it" - nodded Houki as she fell to the ground in surrender. She had learned over the years how to rest properly in situations where it was warranted.

"You'll be responsible for protecting her in case any of those things get too close, Tsubaki" - Tatenashi said as she narrowed her eyes and watched Lindow's older sister closely with a frown. She understood what it was like to suffer for your younger brother, but that didn't mean she accepted Tsubaki's decision, not because she didn't have empathy for her or won't understand her situation, but because to her, Lindow couldn't compare to Houki.

It was hypocritical of her, but she wouldn't lie to feel better about herself, so it was better to accept the truth. Tatenashi hated to see the state of her friend for being in a situation she could have ignored, but she didn't that because they would possibly be her new allies.

"O-OK"- Tsubaki nodded in surprise as she noticed the drastic change in Tatenashi's expression. She wasn't treating her like she always did, now she was much more cold and distant, as if she didn't want to be with her a second longer.

Tsubaki didn't know what to say or do, after all, she didn't think something like this would happen, but what made it worse, was that this could translate to Cloud no longer being interested in her. Just thinking about it made her heart break, but somehow she could understand it.

Tatenashi looked over and noticed the strange creature that was fighting the [Aragami], only to frown as he noticed how it was acting more and more like an animal - "I see."

Tatenashi's spear began to glow weakly as she noticed how her energy was decreasing slightly, though it was manageable, all thanks to being close to Houki's [Akatsubaki] - "Perfect, the energy is regenerating a bit faster than it runs out, though this is only possible by being close to Houki."

"ROAR!" - the [Aragami] that were attacking, roared fiercely at the arrival of their new prey, but at the same time they were a bit terrified because their instincts were telling them that they were in danger.

"Normally I like to have fun while fighting, but right now I don't have the time, nor the energy to play with you" - said Tatenashi as she stood on guard. She had decided to guard her companions instead of rushing in wildly and leaving free space for those things to attack them - "Come, I'm waiting for you."

"ROAR!" - the beasts seemed to understand the blue-haired woman's provocation, so they jumped at her without a second thought.

"Heh ~" - Tatenashi smiled as her gaze sharpened, she quickly ducked to dodge the claws of one of the beasts as she used her spear to pierce the eye of another [Aragami].

The cry of pain echoed in the scene, but to the beast's misfortune, Tatenashi used some more of her energy to unleash a powerful attack that destroyed the core of the beast.

Tatenashi quickly withdrew his spear from inside the beast and continued to fight with the others as a fine mist began to surround the battlefield.

The [Aragami] were surprised at this drastic change, more so when they noticed how the sun was in the sky.

"Dance for me" - Tatenashi muttered as her silhouette disappeared in the mist, although inside she was letting out a sigh of relief as she saw how the mist had appeared without her doing anything, all thanks to the fact that after becoming a [Recruit] of Cloud, her armor had been modified by the [System] and now this was a passive ability of her [IS].

Tatenashi was moving inside the fog while her silhouette appeared from time to time to disorient her prey. She was using the area as a dance ground while the [Aragami] didn't know where to attack, at least until they heard the suffering cry of one of their own.

Lindow was watching this from a distance where he could only notice the mist expanding as his eyes glittered with excitement. He could feel something calling to him from within that white curtain, something that would make him grow much stronger.

With a swift movement, the grayish beast ran into the mist with a wild grin on its face.

Tsubaki watched this helplessly because thanks to the [Aragami]'s loss of vision, some of them had decided to go where the prey that hadn't moved were, though to Tsubaki's relief, not many [Aragami] had made this decision - "Tch!"

The black-haired woman gave Houki a glance to see her condition, but she was still with her eyes closed, as if she was having a nice dream.

"Houki-san" - Tsubaki muttered while gritting her teeth as she received an attack from [Aragami] with only her [God Arc]. She could feel her whole body shaking and being pushed by the beast as it growled fiercely - "Okay, that's enough."

Tsubaki prepared to unleash the full power of her [God Arc], when she heard a familiar voice.

"We're finally here!" - Sophia exclaimed as she ran alongside Sakuya a small group of soldiers.

"Girls!" - Tsubaki exclaimed excitedly as she saw how help had arrived, even if it was just a few soldiers that might not make much of a difference.

"Looks like you're glad to see us" - smiled Sakuya, but her expression quickly changed to a serious one because the situation didn't warrant a more emotional meeting - "Where's Lindow?"

Tsubaki's expression changed drastically when they said her younger brother's name, so she quickly gave them an explanation of what had happened.

Sakuya was silent when she heard all this as she looked in the direction of the strange mist that covered part of the area, then looked at Sofia who seemed to be having a nervous breakdown - "Sofia!"

"Lindow!" - Sofia exclaimed as she started running towards the mist, only to be grabbed by Sakuya's hand - "What are you doing!"

"What are you doing!" - Sakuya roared as she glared neutrally at the blonde woman - "Do you even understand the situation we're in!"

Sofia tried to scream, but was taken aback as she felt Sakuya slap her - "Huh?"

"Why don't you understand!" - Sakuya exclaimed as she looked at the blonde woman coldly - "I know you're worried about him, but you have to understand that he's not the only one in danger in this place!"

Sofia looked around and noticed how the soldiers who had followed her, were looking at her coldly after seeing her reaction and actions. She knew that they were in a bad position right now, and from what she was seeing, the soldiers would not try to help her if something happened.

Tsubaki was embarrassed to see this because she was not acting much better, making her start to feel a huge guilt for everything that had happened. Because of her wishes, she had condemned a group of brave soldiers to death, soldiers who also had families, friends, loved ones.

Houki slowly opened her eyes as she stood up and watched as now they were not alone. She slowly walked to the soldiers and looked at them seriously before ducking her head - "I'm sorry, because of me, many of our brothers have fallen today."

Tsubaki opened her mouth in surprise when she heard this as she felt her whole body freeze. She knew that Houki was not the one to blame for all those deaths, but her.

"Houki-sama" - said a soldier who was aware of the situation.

"I know what you think, but as much as they are responsible for putting us in this predicament, I was the one who failed to lead them back home" - Houki replied as she continued with her head down.

Sophia and Tsubaki felt how everyone looked at them coldly, but said nothing to try to refute the woman's words. It might sound hypocritical of them, but they were happy that they were not the ones who would be held responsible. They just wanted Lindow to recover as soon as possible.

Houki gave them a neutral look, but said nothing to make the two women's positions worse. She knew that they were suffering, and that the guilt was starting to get worse and worse, that's why she hadn't said anything.

"It's better for them to suffer in silence and feel the guilt eating them up inside" - Houki thought as she concentrated on the soldiers - "I want everyone to line up and get ready for when the [Aragami] approach, I'm going to go support Tatenashi, and before I go, I'm going to make something clear"

Houki slowly looked seriously in Sophia and Tsubaki's direction, and said to them - "And as a tip, I'm going to mercilessly attack Lindow if he does something stupid like attacking Tatenashi, is that clear?"
