Chapter 416 ( Resting Together )

"Annoying bastard" - muttered Tatenashi as she took a breath after seeing how the grayish beast was on the ground bleeding - "And what's worse, it's still alive."

"Its vitality is impressive for a beast that has only just been born" - replied Houki as she continued to be on guard because her instincts told her that the battle wasn't over yet.

"I think it's a good time to end its life, at least with this we can give both Lindow, and Sophia a well-deserved rest" - said Tatenashi as Houki nodded weakly.

The two women slowly walked to the beast as they prepared for whatever might happen.

Lindow slowly looked at them with cold eyes as they approached, unable to move a single muscle in her body.

The two women had been effective in battle, they had not only landed critical hits against Lindow, but had also attacked to immobilize.

"Girls, are you okay!" - Sakuya exclaimed from out of the fog.

"I think it's a good time to defuse this" - said Houki as she looked around.

Tatenashi nodded as she retracted what little shield her spear had, only for the mist to start disappearing in a matter of seconds.

The soldiers, Sakuya, and Tsubaki, watched as the cloudy curtain slowly disappeared, only to be surprised to see how Tatenashi and Houki were safe despite their injuries and fatigued faces.

"Wait, where's Sofia-san?" - Tsubaki asked worriedly as she didn't see her friend anywhere, not noticing how Sakuya's face was completely white from what she had managed to see - "Sakuya?"

"Look over there" - Sakuya replied as she pointed to the side with a wobbly finger.

Tsubaki slowly looked in that direction, only to feel her body lose what little energy she had managed to muster - "No, impossible!"

The soldiers looked in the same direction, only to show different expressions. Some were terrified, others were shocked, another group was with cold expressions on their faces, and finally Yoh who was as if nothing had happened.

"Sofia-san!" - Tsubaki exclaimed as she ran towards the female corpse, or at least what was left of it, only to see how the woman's body had been torn apart by sharp fangs - "How could you, Lindow!"

"What else did you expect from a beast?" - Yoh asked disdainfully, though he had to admit that the poor woman had died a tragic death.

"Can't you say something kind even once!" - Tsubaki exclaimed angrily as she listened as the man continued to spit on her desires.

Was it wrong to wish for the recovery of a loved one?

"Do you want to keep defending the indefensible?!" - Yoh exclaimed angrily as he pointed at the corpse of his former mission partner - "Look what happened because you didn't want to see reality! She's dead, she died in the most tragic and stupid way possible! She had a senseless death, one that could have been prevented, but no, she kept thinking with her emotions, and not with her brain!"

Tsubaki recoiled with every word the man said why he knew them to be true.

Yoh relaxed after saying these words, only to look at Tatenashi and Houki - "I'm sorry."

He wouldn't lie, he had enormous respect for these two brave women, not because they were strong, but because they withstood everything that was thrown at them in order to complete with their mission.

Houki nodded calmly as she turned her attention back to the beast in front of them.

Tatenashi only shrugged, though she had to admit she had gained a new respect for the soldier.

"What are you planning to do, Houki-san?" - Sakuya asked as she earned the gaze of everyone present.

Tsubaki slowly looked up as she bit her lip because somehow she could deduce what was to come.

"Kill him" - Houki replied coolly as she discreetly glanced at her victim's older sister, only to notice how she seemed to tremble slightly.

Sakuya sighed with regret because with this, Tsubaki wouldn't be able to get close to Cloud's two recruits for quite a while, it was even possible that she wouldn't be able to get close to Cloud himself either.

Tatenashi watched this with unconcern because he honestly didn't care if Tsubaki became a recruit or not.

Houki decided to ignore everything else and concentrate completely on Lindow while an apathetic expression seemed on her beautiful face.

"Isn't there another solution?" - Sakuya asked as she shook her head as she knew this was a stupid question.

Not only had Lindow killed a soldier, but this woman was none other than the woman he had managed to love. Even if he were to return to normal, it was possible that he would go insane for killing Sophia.

"You don't have to speak for me, Sakuya" - Tsubaki muttered as she sighed regretfully - "It's better that this ends once and for all, after all, he deserves to rest next to the person who stole his heart."

Sakuya remained silent before nodding.

"Prepare weapons" - Houki said seriously. She had decided to put aside killing him herself, and now she was going to have everyone present attack and thus prevent accidents.

The soldiers walked beside Houki with different expressions.

Tsubaki bit her lip when she saw the execution that would unfold in front of them.

"Close your eyes" - Tatenashi said as she appeared in front of the black-haired woman.

"Are you trying to comfort me?" - Tsubaki asked sarcastically.

"No, I don't have the time or the need" - replied Tatenashi coldly - "I'm just trying to feel better about myself by helping you".

"Feel better about yourself?" - Tsubaki asked as she frowned.

"I have a younger sister too, one that would make me react in a similar way to you" - Tatenashi replied as she looked the black haired woman straight in the eyes - "I haven't seen her in years, so there are times when I start to wander and wonder if she's alright"

Tsubaki was silent as she waited for the blue haired woman to continue.

"But unlike you, I have lived my life for the sole purpose of taking the reins of my organization" - Tatenashi continued as her gaze sharpened. The aura surrounding her body changed to a very different one, she was now surrounded by a thin layer of ice that seemed to freeze anything that made contact with her - "I have been trained to discard everything necessary to fulfill my goal, be it family, loved ones, or members of my team"

"But everything changed when I went to a special place and started meeting all kinds of people" - Tatenashi said as her aura returned to normal.

"Cloud?" - Tsubaki asked as she was taken aback by such drastic changes.

"No, Chifuyu-san" - replied Tatenashi as she shook her head - "She is the strongest woman I have ever met, a woman who never lost a battle, at least until Cloud appeared."

Tsubaki was surprised to hear so much about the story of the woman in front of her, and she had to admit that she was curious to know more, but to her misfortune, Tatenashi seemed unwilling to say any more words.

The blue-haired woman slowly turned around and walked to her friend.

Tsubaki was silent for a few seconds as she felt everything that had happened become part of her memory, though her expression changed when she heard the sound of gunshots echoing nearby - ". . ."

"With that we're done" - Houki muttered as she walked over to Lindow and noticed how he was on the verge of death - "It's time for you to rest and meet her again in the other world."

Lindow looked up weakly as he began to cry.

Houki watched this silently as she shook her head. It was obvious that Lindow had regained consciousness at the end of his journey, but none of this mattered, not when he could get out of control again.

"You will be remembered as a hero, your efforts will be written in history" - Houki continued as she cut off Lindow's head with her katana.

The soldiers lowered their heads in respect despite the havoc and trouble Lindow had caused during the last few hours, after all, one accident did not erase years of service as a soldier.

Tsubaki bit her lower lip to the point that blood began to well up along with the tears.

Sakuya hugged Tsubaki gently as the black-haired woman burst into tears.

Tatenashi watched this silently as she shook her head and wondered if she would ever be in a familiar situation, though he quickly shook his head to push those thoughts away. The moment something like this happened, she would disappear along with everyone she knew, after all, Cloud was the only thing keeping them as individual beings.

Houki instructed one of the soldiers to set fire to Lindow's body while they cut a small hole nearby so they could bury Sophia. If they were going to be together in the afterlife, she would also let them rest in peace in this world together.
