Chapter 537 ( Attention )

"I think this isn't the town we're looking for" - Kyoko said as she looked around the town and noticed how everyone around wasn't acting like a place subdued by a humanoid insect, and it didn't help that everyone was flashing a smile, as if their lives couldn't get any better, even though they were in the middle of nowhere.

"We can't let our guard down yet, it's possible that this is just a screen they want to use" - Kyōka replied while frowning - "What do you think, Cloud?"

"That both of your opinions are feasible, but for now we'll continue in this place for a few days before continuing our journey" - Cloud answered seriously while activating his senses to the maximum, but all his efforts were useless because no matter when he tried to find something strange in this place, everything was too normal, although that at the same time was strange.

"I still think this is too weird" - Kyōka said while looking around with a frown - "For a place far away from any civilization, and with little way to call for help in case of a beast attack, this place is too happy, to the point that it seems artificial."

"I think so too" - Cloud replied as he walked over to a smiling merchant - "Hi, I'd like to ask you something."

"Sure, what do you need?" - Asked the merchant with a huge smile.

Cloud narrowed his eyes because he didn't notice falseness in the man's gaze, but still the whole thing felt unnatural.

"Sir?" - The merchant said in confusion.

"I'm sorry, I was just thinking about something" - Cloud replied calmly - "I'd like to ask you if anything strange has happened lately?"

"Lately?" - repeated the merchant as he started to think - "Not really, it's just that the town has been much more peaceful thanks to the fact that there haven't been so many attacks during the last few days."

"I see" - Cloud muttered as he started to think - "Have there been any disappearances of men or women?"

The merchant frowned at this question as he felt that the man in front of him was someone strange and dangerous.

"No, no one has disappeared, now I ask that if you are not going to buy anything, then don't bother me" - said the merchant with a curt tone.

Cloud was surprised at the drastic change of attitude, though he quickly retreated into silence.

"What happened?" - Kyōka asked in confusion as she watched the blond return thoughtfully.

"I think the effects of being enemies of the [Dimensional Will], are starting to take effect" - Cloud replied with a frown - "That merchant is starting to show hostility, and from what I can see, the people around us are too."

Kyoko looked around and noticed that it was true, everyone was scowling at them, as if they were a group of criminals or someone with a highly contagious disease.

"I guess this makes our investigation a bit more difficult, but now I'm curious how it will affect the people who know us" - Kyōka said with a frown.

"It won't affect them because they have already interacted with us" - replied Cloud while closing his eyes - "It happened the same in the world of [God Eater], despite making me the enemy of the world, the people who knew me, didn't attack me even when they didn't know about my true identity."

"That's interesting" - said Kyōka as she started to think - "So we won't have to worry about Netero and the [Zodiac] girls, although it's a bit worrisome that the other members of the [Hunter Association] are coming after us."

"We can only try not to kill them, other than that, we can use any means necessary to end this quickly" - Cloud said as he closed his eyes - "And it's not like we're missing much to finish this mission, there's just one more criminal to go."

"Yeah, but this world is fun, it's full of adventures and things to discover" - said Kyōka with annoyance - "If I'm honest, I don't want to leave just yet"

"But the time to leave is near" - replied Cloud while shaking his head - "We can't stay long, not to mention that I can see that your levels have already reached the possible limit of this world"

"You have a point" - muttered Kyōka with annoyance while snorting with irritation - "Anyway, we'd better go to the hotel, or maybe we'd better go back to the forest because something tells me that the management of the place we hosted, won't let us in."

And so it was.

"Is this true?" - Meruem asked with a frown after hearing Neferpitou's report.

"Hai, we heard rumors of a certain group of 3 people that have appeared in the city, and from what I could hear, I'm pretty sure it's that thing along with two companions" - Neferpitou said seriously.

"If that's true, then we'll have to be a bit more discreet, although I don't think we'll have a problem with it because we already have everything we need" - said Meruem while looking at the two unconscious men in front of him - "But leaving that aside, you'd better not go near them, even if it's quite possible that it's not them, after all, we don't know where they might be, or how close they are to the city."

"I will follow your orders, your royal majesty" - Neferpitou said as she looked down - "what do you want me to do with these humans?"

"I want you to get as much information out of them as possible with your skill" - said Meruem seriously - "I want to learn as much as I can before I can decide my next steps."

"Ok, I will do it right away, I promise I will bring news as quickly as possible" - said Neferpitou as he silently withdrew with the two men.

Meruem closed his eyes as he started to think, only to see Youpi walking in his direction with a serious expression - "What's going on?"

"My king, Shaiapouf has disappeared and I can find no trace of where he went" - Youpi answered seriously.

"That idiot!" - Meruem exclaimed in terror because it was obvious that Shaiapouf had left just before giving the news of the possible appearance of the blond beast in the city.

Just the thought of the consequences of him finding Shaiapouf would completely destroy his plans.

"I swear I'm going to kill him with my own hands when he comes back, if he comes back of course" - Meruem said neutrally while gritting his teeth in fury.

"Come back alive, why shouldn't I when this city has no one who can stand up to us, my king?" - Youpi asked with a frown as he felt a bad feeling.

"It used to be like that, but now, it's something very different" - Meruem said coldly as he looked at his subordinate with fury - "That thing is in the city, or at least that's what we think."

Youpi's expression distorted when he heard this.

He now understood his leader's expression and the reason for his fury at Shaiapouf's disappearance, so he quickly knelt down - "I'm sorry I didn't do anything to stop it, my king, I deserve to be punished."

"No, you did not know about his presence, so you are not to blame" - said Meruem as he calmed down and regained his composure - "The guilty one is Shaiapouf for acting when I have not ordered him to do anything."

"My king, he's acting like this because..." - Youpi said as he tried to improve the situation of his brother and fellow [Royal Guard].

"I know the reason why he is acting like this, I have low memories of my mother after devouring her, so I understand how he wishes to regain his stupid position" - said Meruem while hitting the table with such force that he destroyed it with utmost ease - "But that does not matter to me, I do not care who is on top of the other among you three, I do not care to know who is the strongest of you three, I also do not care to know what you think of me. I only wish you to follow my instructions and remain loyal."

"I understand, my lord!" - Youpi exclaimed as he again looked down. He had already done all he could, and if he was honest, he was only helping Shaiapouf because he was of use to the king, but if his leader had already decided to eliminate him, then he would accept it without hesitation.

"Okay, I want you to watch the entrance and let me know if anyone approaches, don't try to confront them" - Meruem said seriously because his instincts again were telling him to run away, but no more.

He had learned too much from the books he had read, so he understood that if he kept running away, it would turn everything counterproductive to his goal, not to mention that Shaiapouf was still unaccounted for, so there was still no need to make a strategic retreat.

"I just hope that idiot is alive, and if so, then I'll have the pleasure of killing him with my own hands" - Meruem said with fury because he had endured enough from his idiot "big brother" - "You wanted my attention? Well, now you have it, and you're going to enjoy every second of it when I get my hands on you."
