--- Mary Skelter: Nightmares, Graveyard, Area 1 ---
THUNCG!!
Lumine extracted her sword from the corpse of a flower-like creature with an orifice in its corona. She then gestured with her blade to the side to disperse the pink blood.
Scattered across the ground were the carcasses of various Marchens, each more peculiar than the last. Some looked like tiny, one-eyed birds, their delicate forms accented by bat-like wings and webbed paws that hinted at their surreal nature. Among these, a more formidable Marchenes soared through the air, its four luminous eyes gleaming menacingly. At the same time, it jealously guarded a collection of four ornate keys that shimmered with an otherworldly light. In contrast, there were the worm-like Marchens, their bodies adorned with five vibrant petals that encircled a gaping maw filled with sharp, menacing fangs—much like the one Lumine had just vanquished. Each creature bore the weight of an unsettling charm, leaving an eerie atmosphere in their wake.
As Lumine examined these Marchens, she found herself deep in thought.
'Lumine: Masked Bird, Stone Eyes, Metroworm and…'
She then turned her head to observe an alternative battlefield.
SLASH!!
SLASH!!
There, she saw a Marchen resembling a giant insect. Its iridescent exoskeleton shimmering softly in the light. With four slender, articulated arms and two sturdy legs, it moved with an elegance that belied its insect-like form. Delicate wings, reminiscent of a butterfly's, fluttered gently behind it, their intricate patterns adding an enchanting touch to its already surreal appearance.
The creature lashed out with its claws in a flurry of vicious strikes, eager to rip its foes to shreds. Yet, it found itself outmatched by the blue-haired girl, whose swift movements allowed her to evade every deadly swipe with grace. She danced around its attacks, a blur of motion that seemed to taunt the beast with each narrow escape.
'Lumine: Venom Eater. With this, we have successfully confronted nearly all the Marchens that emerge in Area 1.'
SHIN!
Seizing the moment, Cinderella skilfully dodged the next claw and executed a flawless backflip. As she landed, her right foot—adorned with a sharp blade—divided the Marchen into two equal parts.
The Traveler expressed surprise at this situation.
'Lumine: Pretty good. Likely because, when she began fighting, Marchen's liquid consistently dripped onto her due to her martial arts expertise. This exposure increased her rate of corruption. As a result, Dawn must have prevented her from engaging in battle. As a result, she developed her own fighting style to minimize contact with Marchen's fluid and reduce the risk of succumbing to Blood Skelter.'
Smiling a little, Lumine nodded inwardly while praising.
'Lumine: This also explains why her movements are more swift, flexible, and refined than Red Riding Hood's.'
SPLURT!!
With a swift motion, the blonde turned her gaze just in time to catch a stunning sight—Otsuu was in the midst of a fierce battle, her tendrils wrapping around the Masked Birds with precision. One by one, they succumbed to her grasp, their struggles futile against her overwhelming strength. The scene was both mesmerising and terrifying, a captivating display of the power of Nightmare.
The Bamboo girl then tossed them away like trash with a decisive flick. The sound of them hitting the wall echoed before she turned on her heel and strode to Lumine.
Otsuu: Are you ok, Prince---
Lumine: Lumine.
Before the bamboo girl could proceed, the Traveler expressed her discontent through a frown and interjected.
Otsuu: Y-Yes, Lumine.
Lumine: I swear, Otsuu, if you don't stop calling me "Princess," I won't talk to you again.
Otsuu: I-I will try.
Lumine: Hmph.
Noticing the blonde sulking, Nightmare couldn't help but smile wryly.
Initially, Lumine did not take issue with Otsuu referring to her as "Princess." However, when Otsuu commented that Lumine appeared cold, indifferent, and ominous in that form, the Traveler experienced a sense of revulsion and requested that Otsuu refrain from using that title.
Why? Because she refused to believe that's her.
Or was she fleeing from the unsettling truth that loomed over her like a shadow? Lumine found herself caught in a whirlwind of uncertainty, unsure of her own heart and mind. The conflict within her stirred restlessly, leaving her to grapple with questions she couldn't quite face.
'Lumine: What exactly am I? It is evident that I am not human; the manipulation of the wind element or the Anemo powers I wield is beyond the capabilities of human beings. I also do not classify as a Marchen or a Blood Maiden, as my blood is red, and the exposure to Marchen blood hasn't altered the colouration of my eyes.'
The question had been persistently gnawing at the Traveler ever since she heard of the "Abyssal Princess." A profound sense of unease enveloped her as she contemplated the possibility that she might embody something far more treacherous and malevolent than the Marchen, Nightmare, or even the dreaded Jail. Each thought deepened her fears, amplifying the weight of uncertainty that hung heavily in her mind.
Cinderella: Lumine, are you there?
Lumine: E-Eh? Oh, yes. Yes, I am. Is anything the matter, Cinderella?
Returning to herself, Traveler politely asked.
Cinderella: You were zoning out. No matter how many times we called, you didn't respond.
Lumine: Oh, I apologize! I got lost in thought for a moment there.
Otsuu: You've been a bit out of sorts lately. It's really important to refocus—don't let Marchen exploit your distraction! Take a moment to gather yourself.
Lumine: I will… Though I don't feel anxious about it. Because I am confident that Otsuu will stand by me and protect me if anything happens. Right?
She responded with humour and confidence. Otsuu was caught off guard by Lumine's strong belief in her, which filled her with warm pride, prompting her to thump her chest confidently.
Otsuu: Of course. With me here, no harm will come to Lumine.
Lumine: Thank you, Otsuu. I know I can count on you.
Cinderella watched from the sidelines, her lips twitching in a faint smile. The blonde and the nightmare were completely engrossed in their conversation, so much so that they seemed to have forgotten her presence entirely. She couldn't help but feel a mix of amusement and disappointment as she observed their animated exchange, feeling momentarily invisible in their world.
She took a moment to set her thoughts aside, feeling a mix of wonder and clarity as she observed the closeness between them. It became evident to her that Lumine's words weren't just meant to alleviate Otsuu's concerns; they reflected a deep sincerity. Lumine genuinely believed Otsuu, feeling confident that she could rely on her support.
'Cinderella: Seeing how a human and nightmare can walk side-by-side is unheard of. No one in the Liberated District would believe it unless they see it with their own eyes.'
She shook her head, pushed those thoughts aside, and approached them.
Cinderella: Should we keep going, or do you want to take a quick break first?
Both individuals redirected their attention toward her. Lumine contemplated the situation, observing that the blue-haired girl's breathing remained even and unlabored, which clearly indicated her complete well-being despite the recent physical confrontations.
Lumine: Let's keep the momentum going! The sooner we wrap this up, the sooner we can head back.
Cinderella: Um.
As the trio ventured deeper into the graveyard, Lumine took in her surroundings with fresh eyes, marking the unfamiliar territory in her mind. This was her first visit, and despite balancing the need to map out the Graveyard alongside the City Streets and Downtown, she felt a sense of confidence. She knew that while she might not capture every intricate detail, she would be able to recall enough to translate her mental map onto paper later once she returned home.
As they delved deeper into the eerie Graveyard, the girls found themselves navigating a series of treacherous obstacles that tested their agility and wits. Among these were the menacing spike traps concealed beneath layers of fallen leaves and dirt. With quick reflexes, they deftly manoeuvred through these hidden dangers, narrowly avoiding the sharp points that could spell doom for the unwary.
However, the pitfalls presented a greater challenge. These deceptive holes yawned open suddenly in the ground, appearing without warning in their path. Recognizing the need to exercise caution, the group had no option but to take a lengthy detour around them. As they skirted the edges of these ominous voids, the sense of danger heightened, reminding them that in this forsaken place, even the terrain itself could be a formidable enemy.
Lumine stood at the edge of the ominous pitfall, her heart racing as she contemplated the abyss before her. Alone, she would have harnessed her wind element to leap gracefully across the treacherous gap. But today was different; Otsuu and Cinderella accompanied her, their safety resting on her shoulders. As she glanced at them, a wave of uncertainty washed over her. She felt the familiar tug of her abilities, yet the mastery she sought remained just out of reach. Doubts clouded her mind—could she truly control the winds enough to carry them safely? The challenge loomed larger than the pit itself, and with each passing moment, her confidence waned.
Taking a longer route led to new discoveries for the group, enhancing their exploration of the area. Along the way, they engaged in numerous conversations, which helped them deepen their understanding of one another. As time went on, they began to lower their guard and form stronger connections.
As Cinderella conversed with Otsuu, she noticed that, aside from her unique appearance, the bamboo girl acted much like any other human. This led her to wonder if all Nightmares were alike or if Otsuu might be a special case. In response, the bamboo girl shared that she wasn't certain either, as she hadn't had many discussions with other Nightmares.
One thing she was sure of was the existence of a clear hierarchy among them. Whenever she found herself in a vulnerable position, the stronger ones often took advantage of her weakness, pushing her around and belittling her. Lumine and Cinderella, although sympathetic to Otsuu's plight, remained blissfully unaware that this was a reflection of the dynamics present in human society as well, where power imbalances often led to the oppression of the less fortunate.
Historically, individuals or groups in positions of power have often exerted control over those in less favourable positions, leading to systems of suppression and inequality.
Lumine was aware of the situation, yet the fog of her sealed memories rendered her as innocent and unworldly as Cinderella or the many other maidens who had no time to ponder such matters. Their hands were perpetually occupied with vanquishing formidable Marchens and carrying out the relentless tasks dictated by Dawn. This relentless focus left little room for dreams or distractions, their lives a tapestry woven with threads of duty and survival.
If it weren't for the warning on the note Lumine discovered at the beginning, she might have considered joining Dawn and becoming one of their blood maidens.
Soon, the girls moved up to the next floor, and then to the following one.

--- Mary Skelter: Nightmares, Graveyard, Area 4 ---
Upon entering the new area of the Jail, the three young women immediately experienced an increased sense of tension. As they progressed further into this region, they observed a significant escalation in both the strength and number of adversaries. Specifically, the foes present in Area 3 were twice as powerful and numerous compared to those encountered in Area 1. This stark contrast necessitated a heightened level of effort and strategy on their part to effectively address the challenges they faced. Additionally, the overall atmosphere in this area felt more oppressive than in previous locations, further contributing to their sense of unease.
Cinderella: Can you feel that electric tension in the air? It's hard to ignore. Such a sense of danger is almost palpable, and honestly, it's not all that surprising.
Otsuu: "Oh? It looks like you're holding onto a little secret!"
As the atmosphere thickened with curiosity, the blonde and the bamboo nightmare shifted their attention to the blue-haired girl, eager for her response. She quickly dispelled the tension by answering them without hesitation.
Cinderella: The Professor warned sternly: "Do not venture beyond Area 3." He emphasised that crossing into that region would lead us to a place unlike any we had ever encountered before.
Lumine: ...….
Otsuu: ...….
Seeing the puzzled looks on their faces, the blood maiden felt a wave of awkwardness wash over her. Determined to bridge the gap, she took a deep breath and searched for a way to clarify her words, aiming to make her explanation as straightforward as possible.
Cinderella: Aa… How should I say it… You can imagine it as a jail tower with lower and upper floors. Areas 1 to 3 can be regarded as lower floors of the areas, while Areas 4 to 6 can be seen as the upper…. Does it make it easier?
Lumine: A bit.
The Traveler replied and started pondering about something.
'Lumine: Means starting from Area 4, the survival challenges intensify for even blood maidens, let alone ordinary humans. This raises a crucial question: how do civilians become aware of the types of Marchens present in these regions and the unique materials that can be discovered here?'
Lumine: Cinderella, does Dawn happen to have a guidebook filled with the details about the various types of Marchens found across different areas or levels?
Cinderella: We do. Miko encourages us to memorise it before deploying, as it improves our chances of completing missions and enhances our overall safety.
Lumine: Does it contain information about Marchens beyond Area 3?
Cinderella: No. As I mentioned earlier, the professor made it abundantly clear that we are not allowed to go deeper.
Lumine: One last question. Are the Blood Maiden and Dawn the only ones who uphold this information? Or do you share it with the other people of the Liberated District?
Cinderella: As far as I know, people like Order of the Sun occasionally ask for it. However, the Professor always declines their request.
Otsuu: Why is it? If people learn about it, won't they be able to protect themselves better?
Hearing this, a sad expression appeared on the girl's face as she answered.
Cinderella: We posed the same question, and Haru offered an intriguing perspective. By choosing to keep this information under wraps, we're actually safeguarding them as well.
Otsuu: Eh? How so?
Cinderella: The majority of residents in the Liberated District are former prisoners who endured daily torture at the hands of the Marchens before their rescue. Although they are thankful for their current safety, deep-seated feelings of hatred and resentment toward the Marchens persist among them.
Lumine: In other words, once they discover the Marchens' weakness, they will charge into jail to take revenge for all the suffering that the Marchens have inflicted on them.
Otsuu: That's suicide!
Lumine: I agree. But even if there are minor chances to kill Marchens, most people will cling to it.
Cinderella: Um. That's why Dawn refused to share this information.
The Traveler frowned upon hearing this.
'Lumine: Then how do people know about it?'
The blonde recalled that the requests she received were individual requests that had nothing to do with Dawn.
'Lumine: Why do civilians have the intel that even Dawn lacks? And why does Dawn have heard of it yet?'
As she pondered the situation, a torrent of questions began to swirl in her mind, each one vying for her attention and stacking upon the others. Just then, a spark of recollection ignited as she recalled the mysterious detail referenced in the note.
.
Never trust anyone immediately; Jail and Marchens are not your only enemies.
.
'Lumine: Initially, I believed there was a warning related to "Dawn," but I realise now that I might have misinterpreted the situation. It seems there's a deeper conspiracy unfolding, and even civilians are becoming involved. I can only hope that I'm just overanalysing the situation.'
Determined to keep her mind clear, she resolved to set her thoughts aside for now and vow to dive deep into her investigation when she returned.
.
.
After navigating through the corridor, Lumine and the group turned right and discovered the peculiar material they had been searching for. It was an unusual and eerie type of spiral grass, capturing their attention with its strange appearance.
The blonde felt a sense of disgust as she looked at the grass. Nevertheless, she decided to take action and reached into her pocket to pull out a piece of cloth. With it, she began to gather the grass, determined to collect it despite her initial repulsion.
Once done, she let out a sigh of relief and smiled before addressing the other two.
Lumine: All of Graveyard's requests have been completed, and now only one remains on City Streets. It's time to wrap up our business here and move on to new adventures. Let's make our exit!
Otsuu: Ok.
Cinderella: It's a relief we don't have to venture any deeper. I can only imagine what dangers might lurk in the shadows below.
Lumine: Yeah.
As they began to walk back, an unexpected darkness enveloped the area around them, causing a noticeable shift in their expressions. The sudden change in their surroundings filled them with apprehension.
Lumine: !!!!!!!!!!!
Otsuu: !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Cinderella: !!!!!!!!!!!
As their eyes met, a silent tension hung in the air. They swallowed hard, feeling their hearts race, and began to murmur, their words laced with hesitation.
All Three: The Nightmare.
Indeed, the air is thick with an unsettling tension, a palpable sign that they have stepped into the shadowy domain of the Nightmare.
Otsuu: We must make our escape, Lumine.
Lumine: I agree. Let's run.
If it was before, Lumine wouldn't have minded the Nightmare and would have stayed to fight. However, after facing a Marchen in the Underground Cavern and the feeling she is getting on this floor, the girl decides to be more cautious.
In the first place, Lumine had no intention of seeking out Nightmare. With all her commission requests completed, she found little purpose in remaining on site and getting embroiled in unnecessary confrontations.
They hurriedly ran towards the path leading back to Area 3. Yet Cinderella stopped her steps just when they were about to leave. This caused the blonde and bamboo girl to halt their steps, too.
Otsuu: What are you doing!? We must make haste.
Cinderella: Hey. Did you hear something?
Lumine: Hear something? …I don't think you.
Otsuu: Are you sure it's not your imagination?
Observing the puzzled look on their faces, the blue-haired girl nervously bit down on her lower lip, her mind racing with uncertainty as she questioned whether her ears were deceiving her.
But in a sudden burst of determination, she spun on her heel and sprinted back into the looming shadows of the dark domain.
Otsuu: Where are you going, Cinderella? It's not time to prove yourselves.
Cinderella: I am sorry, Lumine, Otsuu. I feel that if I don't confirm what I heard just now, I will regret it for the rest of my life.
Lumine: Cinderella…
Cinderella: You don't need to follow me. I will meet you back in Liberated Streets.
Moments after her words lingered in the air, she pivoted gracefully and melted into the shadows, leaving them standing in stunned silence. Their eyes tracked her until she vanished from view entirely.
The girls stood frozen in place, seats as they peered intently down the long, dimly lit corridor that stretched out before them. The silence enveloped them, filled only with the soft rustle of their breaths, while their eyes remained fixated on the empty passage. Shadows danced along the walls, adding an air of suspense to the moment.
Otsuu: What now… Lumine?
Lumine: ...….
After a long, contemplative silence, the girl finally broke free from her thoughts and spoke up, her voice slicing through the stillness.
Lumine: Let's follow. I don't want something to happen to a friend I created a few hours ago.
Both girls smiled at each other and followed the trail of Cinderella.
.
.
.
SWOOSH!!
Cinderella dashed down the dimly lit, grassy path that snaked through the graveyard, each step sending a gentle rustle through the damp blades of grass. The sky above was heavy with dark clouds, casting an ominous shadow over the weathered tombstones that stood like silent sentinels in the stillness of the night. Her heart raced, pounding against her ribcage with a wild intensity, as if it, too, sensed the weight of the eerie atmosphere enveloping her.
With each fleeting moment, she strained to listen, feeling the chill of the wind on her skin as it carried what sounded like a faint, desperate plea for help. It echoed through the air, sending shivers down her spine, and doubt gnawed at her courage—was it a trick of her imagination, or was someone truly in peril in this forsaken place? Alarm bells rang in her mind, warning her that venturing deeper into the graveyard could lead her into a treacherous trap. The fear that she might end up as just another whisper among the spirits made her hesitated, yet a flicker of determination ignited within her. She pressed onward, torn between her dread and the desperate hope of finding someone in need.
As she continued on her journey, she realized that there were no Marchenes obstructing her path or attempting to ambush her. This brought her a sense of relief, as she was keen to avoid any delays caused by a confrontation with them.
She arrived at a larger section of the Graveyard, a serene spot mostly devoid of tombstones. This area felt more like a gathering place for reflection, where visitors could stroll and remember their loved ones who had passed away.
There, she observed a formidable creature with a dragon-like head, sharp contours, and dark blue scales. Its broad grin revealed jagged teeth, and its dark eyes enhanced its intimidating presence. Adorned with a golden headpiece, the creature had a muscular upper body with reddish flesh peeking through torn armor and wore a white and gold ceremonial garment featuring a black gear symbol.
Its left arm was standard and muscular, while the right arm was deformed and massive, holding a blood-stained white and red hammer. The lower body resembled an insect or centipede, with six armoured legs showcasing ornate engravings and sharp claws. The creature wore a gold-trimmed white apron secured with a black and gold belt featuring a gear-shaped buckle and a red gemstone at the collar. Its wide grin and outstretched hand conveyed an intimidating presence.
Cinderella shivered as she gazed at the creature before her. The mere sight of it instilled a sense of pressure that weighed heavily upon her, leaving her breathless and uneasy.
'Cinderella: Graveyard Nightmare.'
The blue-haired girl suddenly shifted her focus to the individuals being pursued by the Nightmare. As she saw them, a surge of shock coursed through her. It all became clear now; the unsettling premonition she had felt earlier made sense now.
They were three girls.
The first had light blue, long, and wavy hair, a red rose accessory, and a black headband. She held a bow in her left hand and arrows in her right. The Second one had bright red hair styled into two long twin tails with black and white ribbon-like accessories resembling bunny ears. She was holding cards with glowing symbols. The last one had short, straight, dark blue with blunt bangs. Her weapon was a wooden, metal cannon-like weapon with glowing pink energy tubes strapped to her back.
The individuals stood out in matching black-red attire, mirroring Cinderella's outfit. This striking similarity suggested a distinct connection, hinting at a more profound relationship or shared purpose.
Cinderella: Sleeping Beauty, Thumbelina, Snow White!
The girl shouted at them after seeing.
Yes, those three girls are also the Blood Maidens working with Dawn.
Cinderella's shout caught the attention of three girls nearby. Initially taken aback by her presence, their surprise quickly turned to reprimand when the red-haired girl scolded her.
Thumbelina: What are you doing here!? Run!
The girl didn't mind and spoke.
Cinderella: I won't. With those injuries weighing you down, do you honestly believe you can outrun it? I can already imagine Sister Thumbelina contemplating staying back to give Sleeping Beauty and Snow White a chance to escape.
Thumbelina: ....
The girl with fiery red hair fell silent, her resolve tightening. This was precisely the plan she had been contemplating. The Nightmare had been relentless, pursuing them for over a day, its haunting presence casting a shadow over every step they took. Their first encounter had been in Area 2—a chilling moment as they felt its eerie eyes on them. Initially, the creature had chased them for an agonising stretch before suddenly vanishing, allowing a fleeting breath of relief. But that relief turned out to be an illusion; it re-emerged before they could gather their wits, driving them into a panicked sprint once more.
It was a cruel game the Nightmare was playing, a grotesque dance of fear and desperation that had left them on the brink of exhaustion. Each time it receded, they had momentarily dared to hope, only to find themselves running again as it reappeared, tauntingly close behind. Now, deep within the twisted heart of the Graveyard, every instinct screamed that escape was no longer an option. The sinister entity blocked their paths, herding them into the darker recesses of Area 4, a land they instinctively knew was perilous.
Their bodies bore the testimony of their flight; crimson streams leaked from countless wounds, each drop a reminder of the battles fought and the toll it had taken. Fatigue seeped into their bones—a burdensome weight that crushed their spirits as much as their limbs. They were haunted, not just by the corporeal monster chasing them, but by the creeping realization that doom was imminent. It was this awareness that prompted Thumbelina to devise her desperate plan: to stay behind and confront the Nightmare, to buy just a few precious moments for her companions, even if it meant facing her own end.
And now that Cinderella had seen through her and revealed it, she was certain that her two sisters wouldn't let her sacrifice herself. Letting out a deep sigh, she and the other two reached Cinderella and turned back to the upcoming Nightmare.
Thumbelina: So, what's your big idea?
Cinderella: We have no choice but to confront it.
Snow White: But we can't win. As you know, the Nightmares are immortal.
Sleeping Beauty: Yup… Yup…
???: Then we need to inflict enough damage on it so that it will go on standby to recover. We can use that time to retreat.
Hearing this familiar yet unfamiliar voice made them look back. There, seeing the person, while Thumbelina, Sleeping Beauty, and Snow White were surprised, a smile appeared on Cinderella's face.
Cinderella: Lumine. You are here.
Shrugging her shoulder, the Traveler replied.
Lumine: I can't let you face such a thing alone.
Cinderella: Hehe. Thank you.
Snow White: Cinderella, do you know her?
Cinderella: Yes. She is my friend. I met her while exploring an Area, and she is very strong.
Snow White: Eh? Stronger than even you?
Cinderella: Yes.
Thumbelina: Could she be a new Blood Mai—
???: Be careful, Lumine. This Nightmare is a lot more powerful than it appeared.
Another voice resounded, and Otsuu showed herself. Seeing her, Thumbelina, Sleeping Beauty, and Snow White's faces turned pale, and they tensed up.
Snow White: A-Another Nightmare.
The dark-blue-haired girl spoke with a trembling voice.
Cinderella: Oh, don't worry. While Otsuu is a Nightmare, she is also a friend.
Thumbelina: A Nightmare as a Friend?
Snow White: This is the first time I have seen this.
Sleeping Beauty: Yup… Yup…
Cinderella: Don't worry, I will explain everything later. For now, we have an enemy to face.
Thumbelina: This day is becoming more and more weirder.
Sighing, she decided not to think about it for now.
On the other hand, the Bamboo girl just nodded to them before looking at the Nightmare just a few steps away.
Otsuu: We must end this fast. For some reason, this area is increasing the Nightmare Strength with each passing second.
Lumine: What? Are you sure, Otsuu?
The girl glanced back at the bamboo girl, who nodded in response.
Taking out her sword, Lumine stood before the group and addressed them.
Lumine: I will take the vanguard.
Thumbelina: Wait… Facing Nightmare alone is suicide.
Lumine: I am not alone. Aren't you already here? Just support me from behind.
With a playful smirk dancing on her lips, the girl fixed her gaze ahead, gripping the sword's hilt with determination. In a burst of energy, she lunged forward, fearlessly charging at the intimidating figure of the Nightmare ahead.
SWOOSH!
.
.
G
.
In a second, she appeared in front of a humongous figure of the Nightmare and swung her sword at it.
DING!!
But just as the strike was about to land, the Nightmare shifted slightly. With a swift and deliberate motion, it raised one of its armoured legs, the greaves gleaming ominously in the dim light, effectively blocking the impending blow.
Lumine exhibited a frown, not merely due to the fact that her offensive manoeuvre had been successfully thwarted but rather because of the apparent ease with which it was countered. She possessed a heightened awareness of her speed, which significantly exceeded that of a typical human or blood maiden, a capability attributed to her Anemo Element. However, the Nightmare had halted her advance with minimal exertion, as if her velocity were negligible in comparison to its formidable presence.
'Lumine: The difference in strength between the Nightmare I encountered in the City Streets and this one is staggering… Could it really be true? Just as Otsuu pointed out, this place seems to be feeding its power, amplifying its menace to a whole new level.'
SWISH!!
With a sudden, bone-chilling roar, the air seemed to split apart. Lumine quickly lifted her gaze, her heart pounding, and her eyes widened as a colossal white hammer hurtled toward her with unstoppable force.
'Lumine: Tch. I let myself get distracted by the thoughts.'
The Traveler was acutely aware that she had little time to retreat. In that fleeting moment, she focused her energy into her sword, aiming to absorb as much of the impending force from the hammer as she could.
FWOOSH!!!
FWOOSH!!
FWOOSH!!
...
…
BOOM!!
BOOM!!
…
Just as the creature's hammer was about to strike, a flurry of arrows flew through the air, targeting its eyes. Forced to shield itself, the Nightmare used its other hand for protection. At that moment, a bomb struck its hammer, causing it to veer off course. Meanwhile, a series of cards impacted its disfigured arm, igniting it into flames.
During the chaos, some wines wrapped around Lumine's waist and pulled her back.
Otsuu: I told you to be careful.
Landing lightly by the bamboo girl's side, the Traveler nodded and answered.
Lumine: Yeah. I overestimated myself.
Letting out a deep sigh, she glanced back.
Lumine: Thank you.
Thumbelina: Hmph. I expected you to be tougher than this, but in the end, we're the ones who had to come to your rescue.
The blonde girl couldn't suppress a wry smile as she observed Thumbelina. It was clear to her that Thumbelina used her harsh words as a shield, concealing the storm of emotions brewing beneath the surface. Her concern for Lumine weighed heavily on her heart. This twin-tail girl was the perfect embodiment of a tsundere—her sharp tongue often belied the warmth that lingered just beneath.
Snow White: It's good to see you are ok, Miss Lumine.
Sleeping Beauty: Yup… Yup…
Lumine: Just Lumine is fine… And I'm sorry for my earlier action. I will be more careful from now on.
Otsuu: I hope so since we won't have time to worry about ourselves, let alone others.
By now, the flames that had consumed the Nightmare flickered and eventually faded into mere embers. Remarkably, the creature emerged unscathed, its dark form untouched by the blaze that had threatened to engulf it.
It loomed above them, a sinister grin spreading across its face. It seemed to delight in the sight of their futile struggle as if they were nothing more than tiny ants caught in a relentless storm.
Lumine: Let's go, Cinderella.
Cinderella: Yes.
The two girls launched themselves at the Nightmare once more, but this time, Traveler unleashed her full strength. As she tapped into her power, the air around her began to swirl, enhancing her agility and speed.
FWOOSH!
FWOOSH!
…
From behind, Sleeping Beauty unleashed a barrage of arrows, again aiming for the eyes.
Once again, the creature raised its hand in a protective gesture. In response, Snow White hurled a bomb at it, but the creature managed to block the attack with its hammer. This time, it was ready, and the force of the explosion failed to shake it.
BOOM!!
In a moment of strategic advantage, Lumine capitalized on the creature's blindness. She deftly harnessed the power of the wind to propel herself and swiftly positioned herself behind it. With precision and speed, she unleashed a flurry of slashes, striking decisively at it.
SLASH!!
SLASH!!
…
Although all attacks struck it, they only left minor scratches that began to heal immediately.
Cinderella was utilizing her speed to target vulnerable spots on the Nightmare's chest with her kicks. However, she encountered a challenge similar to that of Lumine, but her situation was even more dire. Unlike Lumine, her strikes lacked the same swiftness, so by the time she launched her second attack, the damage from her first kick had already healed.
After a fierce struggle lasting several minutes, the Nightmare abruptly began to thrash violently, its dark, imposing form twisting and jerking as if in a desperate bid to dislodge the blonde girl clinging to its back. With each powerful movement, it emitted a low growl of frustration, clearly irritated by the incessant, pesky nibbles that felt like swarming bugs gnawing at its flesh.
Knowing she wouldn't be able to linger much longer, Lumine swiftly kicked the Nightmare back, harnessing the force to propel herself into the air. As she soared high above the tumult of the battlefield, her gaze swept across her companions still locked in combat. What she saw brought a pang of concern to her heart—Thumbelina, Sleeping Beauty, and Snow White were all visibly weary, their once vibrant eyes now clouded with exhaustion. The girls had been worn down before meeting Lumine, and the relentless fighting, coupled with their injuries, had pushed them perilously close to their breaking point. Lumine could see the faint tremble in their limbs, the way they stumbled and faltered, and she realized they might collapse at any moment. Resolute and determined, she made up her mind to bring this battle to a swift conclusion.
Suspended high in the air, Lumine made a resolute decision. With her heart steady, she began to channel the full force of her wind and radiant golden energy into the palm of her outstretched hand. The vibrant teal winds around her roared to life, whipping through the sky as they danced and swirled in a chaotic, yet beautiful, frenzy. Simultaneously, the gentle, shimmering tendrils of Adeptal power wove into the mix, creating a stunning interplay of colors.
As she focused intently, the winds intensified, drawing in the surrounding air and causing an atmospheric disturbance that rippled across the sky. A burgeoning storm seemed to form around her, the ferocity of the winds palpable even to those far below. The swirling currents of teal and gold combined, condensing and compressing with an energy that electrified the atmosphere.
Before long, she had manifested a breathtaking sphere of power in her hand, its size rivaling that of a basketball. This mesmerizing orb was a striking blend of golden and teal hues, with countless currents visibly spinning in intricate patterns, swirling in multiple directions. It pulsed with energy, each rotation a testament to her combination of different elements, ready to unleash its might.
Lumine hovered above the battlefield, taking a deep breath as she focused her golden gaze on the scene below. The people below had momentarily halted their actions, all eyes fixed on her, wide with awe and disbelief. The potent teal golden sphere she held radiated an overwhelming power, sensed by everyone around. The Nightmare, a twisted creation of the Jail, was already repulsed by Adeptal energy, but now it trembled at the ominous threat emanating from Lumine's sphere.
And then she descended. Her target, Graveyard Nightmare.
WHISTLE!!!
With the fervor of a shooting star, she raced toward the menacing Nightmare from the Sky. Surrounding her was a swirling blend of Anemo and Adeptal energy, forming a protective shield that kept everything at bay, safeguarding her.
Sensing the impending doom, with a surge of instinctual urgency, Nightmare turned on its heels and sprinted away, eager to escape the looming catastrophe.
Otsuu: Not so fast.
Too bad, it forgot there were still others who it disregarded as mere ants.
The Bamboo Girl's tendrils shot forward and coiled around three of its legs. Next, she used her full strength and pulled.
This caught the Nightmare off guard and it fell.
BANG!!
Sleeping Beauty didn't let this opportunity go and released the last two arrows with all her remaining strength.
THWCH!
THWCH!!
Nightmare: GROAN!!!!
The Creature groaned in pain as, this time, both arrows lodged directly into its eyes.
Cinderella jumped at this moment and kicked the two arrows, embedding them even deeper before retreating from the area.
Then, the attacks of Snow White and Thumbelina also came. Snow White's most explosive bomb and Thumbelina's red cards covered with flames both entered Nightmare's opened mouth.
BOOM!!!
A fire explosion occurred in the Nightmare's mouth because of the combination of bomb and fire magic. This destroyed the lower mouth of the creature as its burnt pieces fell.
This move did more damage than expected, staggering the Nightmare as it lowered its long head to gather itself.
However, it was too late to do so as Lumine reached it and smashed the teal golden sphere at its unguarded back.
Lumine: Hah!
BANG!!
The Sphere of Power finally collided with the Nightmare, sending ripples through the air. The Creature's scream of pain was swallowed by the earth-shaking roar of the swirling, golden-teal wind that enveloped them. As the sphere relentlessly ground against its back, which was tougher than steel, it began to breach the creature's formidable defenses. Even its regenerative powers struggled to keep pace, faltering under the relentless assault.
A massive tornado started to twist and churn around them, its fierce winds forcing the nearby girls to retreat in a panic as they watched the devastation unfold. The grassland, once serene and untouched, was rapidly torn apart, uprooted as the cyclone grew in strength and size, soon expanding to cover nearly 500 meters. The sheer force of the storm obliterated everything in its path, leaving a scar across the landscape of the Graveyard.
As the colossal tornado roared to life, it became such an extraordinary spectacle that even those in the distant Liberated District caught a fleeting glimpse of the shimmering teal and gold spiral, a mesmerizing yet terrifying force of nature. It was a breathtaking sight, both awe-inspiring and horrifying, marking a moment where the extraordinary clashed with the mundane.
After a few minutes, the wind finally dyed down.
The Blood Maidens who witnessed everything were still shocked after witnessing such a display of power. Still, they all snapped out of their thoughts when they noticed Otsuu rushing towards the now-destroyed battlefield. Seeing her, they also followed with a second thought.
As they approached, a vast crater unfolded before them, its depths shrouded in shadows that seemed to stretch endlessly into the horizon. The walls of the crater were etched with jagged cracks, resembling a fractured mirror reflecting the devastation that had occurred. Scattered across the landscape lay remnants of the Marchens—faint pink stains marked the ground, a haunting reminder of those lost in the violent explosion.
Amid the chaos, shattered tombstones jutted from the earth like broken teeth, their inscriptions worn and forgotten. Nearby, splintered branches lay strewn about, mingling with the remnants of foliage that had once thrived in this once vibrant place. The echoes of destruction were further emphasized by the fragments of glass from lambs that had been caught in the turmoil, glinting eerily in the pale light. Bits of corroded steel gates and tangled roots intertwined with the vegetation, each element a testament to the cataclysm that had transformed this terrain into a desolate wasteland. Though these scattered remnants clung to the edges of the crater, they paled in comparison to the overwhelming barrenness that now dominated the scene, a stark reminder of nature's fragility in the face of such turmoil.
The Blood Maidens and Bamboo Girl couldn't help but gulp nervously, witnessing such destruction. They still had a hard time believing such a devasted attack could be released by a human, but not a God. Still, they kept on moving and finally reached the centre of the crater and found the one they were looking for. However, in the next moment, all of them turned pale.
There, they saw Lumine standing on Nightmare's destroyed body, which had already started to heal, albeit very slowly. But what attracted their attention was her right arm, which was dangling down like the broken arm of a puppet. The blood was oozing out of it nonstop.
Lumine stood amid the swirling chaos, her face as pale as a ghostly apparition. Yet, astonishingly, there was no hint of surprise in her expression. Deep down, she had anticipated this outcome. It was the first time she had dared to merge both the Anemo and Adeptal power, an ambitious endeavor fraught with peril.
As she conjured the luminous sphere of energy, it appeared stable at first glance. However, beneath that glimmering surface lay a tempest of conflict—the two powers clashed violently within. The air around her crackled with instability, and Lumine knew all too well the risks she faced. Had she not intervened and forcefully suppressed the chaotic energies, the sphere would have detonated, sending shockwaves of destruction back toward her.
Though she managed to wrestle the volatile forces into a temporary submission, there was a heavy toll to pay. Pain radiated through her arm, a stark reminder of the struggle she had endured. The ache was a forewarning of the dangers that lay ahead in her quest to master the two powers.
All the muscles, vessels, skin, tendons, and bones of her right arm were thoroughly destroyed. And now red liquid was flowing out of it like a fountain. Now, her right arm was completely useless. A price for turning to do something she wasn't prepared for yet.
Otsuu: Lum..ine…
Hearing this familiar voice, the blonde turned her head towards the source before a slight smile appeared.
Lumine: It's over for now… Otsuu... Now, we can retrea----
Before she could continue, all the fatigue caught up to her, and she finally fell unconscious.
SWOOSH!!
Fortunately, Otsuu moved swiftly and caught her before letting out a sigh of relief.
Snow White: Is she o-okay?
The other Blood Maidens also approached them and looked worried.
Otsuu: Um. She is just too tired after unleashing such a move.
Hearing this, they all finally calmed down.
Cinderella: We should retreat while we still have time.
Sleeping Beauty: Yup… Yup…
Otsuu: Let's go.
With a sense of urgency, they all nodded and swiftly exited the crater. However, just before stepping away, they paused to cast a lingering glance back at the Nightmare, which lay motionless in the center of the crater, its form slowly regaining strength. The sight was surreal; they could hardly fathom how it had survived such a catastrophic onslaught. A wave of dread washed over them as the realization sank in once more—this was why Nightmares were deemed Immortals. The creature's resilience only deepened their fear, solidifying the legend surrounding such formidable beings.
Soon, they reached the path leading back to the previous area. However, just when they were about to continue, something caught Cinderella's eye.
Cinderella: Eh? There is a room there. I don't remember seeing it when we entered this area… What about you, Otsuu?
The Bamboo Girl who was carrying Lumine turned her curious gaze towards where the Blood Maiden was pointing. Seeing that, she was also surprised.
Otsuu: Yeah. There was no such room there.
Cinderella: Then how does it appear?
Sleeping Beauty: The Wall… Crumbled…
The Bow Blood Maiden replied while looking at the half-destroyed wall.
Snow White: You're right! It looks like this hidden room was concealed behind that wall all along. But now, it seems that the shockwave from Lumine's attack has torn through it, leaving half of it in ruins.
Thumbelina: What do we do? Shall we check it out?
Cinderella: Well, the room doesn't seem that big. On the contrary, it's too small. I think it does not even take a minute to check it.
Snow White: What do you think, Miss Otsuu? Should we go ahead and take a look, or should we pass? After all, we wouldn't want to do anything that will delay Lumine's----
She didn't continue and just like looked at the Traveler on the Nightmare's back. The Girl understood what she was trying to say and answered.
Otsuu: Just Otsuu is fine. Well, I think it will be fine if it only takes a minute or two.
Cinderella: Don't worry, it will go and return in a moment.
Saying, she stepped forward and entered the room from the half-destroyed back. But then, the next thing shocked her.
Cinderella: T-This is…
In the room, nothing existed except a large, organic-looking creature or object suspended in the air. The thing resembled a fleshy, red bulbous heart or pod with glossy, vein-like textures on its surface. It had numerous long, spindly red tentacle-like appendages extending downward, some of which appeared to be touching or piercing the floor. A twisted, dark vine-like structure emerged from the top of the pod.
Thumbelina: Huh? Do you find something?
Cinderella's voice also attracted the attention of those outside.
Cinderella: It's a core…
Snow White: Core?
Thumbelina: Wait a minute, you don't mean…
Cinderella: Yes. It's the core that the Professor told us about.
Otsuu: Core?
Snow White: Yes. The professor told us that there are cores inside the Jail that impart power to it. If we find one, we must destroy it at all costs.
Cinderella: Give me a moment, I will destroy it.
The Blood Maiden then gathered strength in her leg and kicked with all her might.
SWISH!!
BANG!!
CRACK!!
SHATTER!!
The core shattered into pieces all around the floor.
Cinderella: I did it!
Thumbelina: Great!
However, before they could celebrate, the Jail started wailing.
Jail: Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!!!
Snow White: Eh? That was…
Thumbelina: Forget it. We have seen Jail wailing many times before. Let's get the heck out of here for now.
Sleeping Beauty: Yup… Yup…
Cinderella: Yeah. Let me pick a piece of core for the professor to research.
Next, she crouched down and picked a chunk of the core. But then…
SHINE!!!
A light appeared in the empty room out of nowhere.
Cinderella: Huh…
The Blood Maiden swiftly brought her hands up to shield her eyes, but the searing brightness flooded her vision, overwhelming her senses. Despite her efforts, the light surged relentlessly, growing more intense with each passing moment, enveloping her in an almost blinding radiance that threatened to consume everything around her.

In the following instant, a swirling pulse of brilliant energy erupted from the radiant light, overwhelming everything in its path. The force of the pulse slammed into Cinderella, sending her sprawling backward as if she were a mere feather caught in a tempest. The raw power continued its relentless journey, shattering the walls that surrounded it with a deafening crack, sending debris flying in every direction. Outside, the chaotic energy collided with the Blood Maidens, their dark forms engulfed in a shimmering wave of light, leaving them reeling from the unexpected force.
The force behind the pulse was overwhelming, hurling everyone like ragdolls caught in a powerful explosion. It surged forward relentlessly, pushing beyond its initial point of impact. As it swept across the Graveyard area, it wreaked havoc on fragile structures, reducing them to mere rubble, and devastating the Marchens that stood in its path. The landscape twisted and crumbled under the sheer intensity, leaving a trail of destruction as it continued on its unstoppable journey.
Before long, the chaos spread beyond the Graveyard Area, sweeping through neighboring districts with relentless force. The Liberated District was caught in the turmoil, with many individuals thrown to the ground and suffering serious injuries amidst the upheaval. However, the most alarming development was yet to come: a nearby building in the heart of the Liberated District began to tremble ominously. As the ground quaked violently beneath it, the structure shuddered in protest before ultimately collapsing in a cloud of dust and debris, leaving the scene engulfed in shock and devastation.
Panic swept through the streets as people scrambled in terror, their eyes wide with horror at the chaos unfolding around them. Buildings trembled and groaned before collapsing, sending plumes of dust and debris raining down on the helpless crowd, claiming numerous lives in an instant. This catastrophic scene played out across the entire Jail, a place once filled with a false sense of security. The towering structure at its heart, the imposing Tower, shook with violent ferocity, its walls cracking and stones plummeting to the ground like jagged hailstones, leaving devastation in their wake.
Before too long, the earth beneath us began to show signs of distress, as deep cracks started to form in the surface. These fissures spread like veins across the ground, creating jagged lines that snaked their way outward. The once-solid terrain now appeared fractured and unstable, signaling a profound change in the landscape and a sense of impending disruption. Many fell inside people and Marchens alike.
The Areas were in a state of decay, as if the very fabric of the Jail was unraveling before our eyes. What once stood as a fortress now resembled a scene from an apocalyptic nightmare. Charred remnants of structures loomed in the distance, their skeletal frames blackened by relentless flames. Water gushed from broken pipes, pooling in murky puddles that reflected the chaos around them. The ground was a patchwork of destruction, with torn up earth and debris scattered like a testament to the violence that had ravaged this place. Everywhere you looked, it was clear that the world here had succumbed to ruin.

Back at the Graveyard.
Lumine, Otsuu, Cinderella, Thumbelina, Snow White, and Sleeping Beauty lay unconscious amidst the haunting ruins of a once-sacred graveyard, now left in shambles. The scene was tragic and eerie: one figure was draped over the twisted remains of a steel fence, while another lay trapped beneath an enormous rock that seemed to have fallen from the sky. Thumbelina hung precariously upside down, ensnared in the gnarled branches of a tree that had lost its battle with time. Nearby, Snow White was sprawled across a broken tombstone, the sharp edges cutting into her delicate attire. Cinderella was embedded in the wall of a crumbling mausoleum, her form partially swallowed by the stone. Last, but not least, Sleeping Beauty found herself half-submerged in a long fissure that had split the earth open, a fitting metaphor for the chaos that had claimed them all.
The remnants of their surroundings whispered tales of despair, each broken piece reflecting the anguish that lingered in the air. The muted colors of the landscape seemed to absorb the light, casting a somber shadow over the fallen figures sprawled on the ground. It was a heart-wrenching scene, one that tugged at the very fabric of one's soul. The girls lay there, their once vibrant innocence now marred by a multitude of injuries that told stories of struggle and pain. Bruises bloomed like dark flowers on their skin, while small cuts and scrapes lined their arms and faces, each mark a stark reminder of the violence they had faced. The stillness around them felt heavy, thick with unspoken sorrow, as the sight of such fragility pierced through the heart, leaving behind a haunting echo of what had been lost.
Scratches and bruises marred their arms and faces, each mark a testament to the pain and struggle they had endured. The jagged lines of their injuries contrasted sharply with the soft skin underneath, while the mottled purples and blues of the bruises told stories of violence and hardship. The expressions etched across their unconscious faces conveyed a deep vulnerability as if they were trapped in a haunting moment that might never fade. For anyone who bore witness to this scene, it served as an unforgettable reminder of human fragility, leaving an indelible mark on their hearts and minds, compelling them to confront the harsh realities faced by those who suffer in silence.
CRACK!!
Out of nowhere, the ground beneath Lumine fractured violently, breaking apart like teetering tiles, and then it gave way, swallowing her into the gaping chasm that opened beneath her. As she descended into the darkness, the air rushed past her, and an extraordinary transformation began to unfurl within the confines of the Jail.
Just before she disappeared from sight, Lumine's golden eyes fluttered open, straining to focus despite the overwhelming sensation of falling. In that fleeting moment, she caught a glimpse of the Jail tower, which had begun to twist and morph into something far more sinister. The once solid structure now loomed larger, shrouded in shadow and emitting an eerie luminescence that gave it an otherworldly quality. The temperature around her seemed to drop, and a palpable chill coursed through the air, sending shivers up her spine as a sense of foreboding washed over her.
As the transformation deepened, the tower became a harbinger of dread, its jagged edges piercing the gloom, while wisps of mist curled around its base like ghostly fingers. Just when the sight became too overwhelming, she felt her consciousness slipping away, and her eyelids grew heavy. In those final moments before darkness claimed her, she sensed a faint, dissonant echo in her mind—an unsettling voice that eluded her comprehension, leaving her in a state of confusion as she plunged into the infinite blackness below.

*A/N: That's it for Mary Skelter Arc. As I was writing this arc and delving deeper into the story, I realized that it could not be completed in just 25-30 chapters. The narrative of Mary Skelter is so vast that it might require a volume with over 100 chapters. Therefore, I have decided to conclude it here for now.
Why "for now"? I plan to write a side story that focuses on Lumine's journey and how she formed her team. Consequently, Lumine will not appear in the remainder of the novel, which will extend to the last volume, the next one.
In any case, I hope you all enjoyed it! From now on, one chapter will be released each week, and it will be as long as this one. The next chapter will continue the journey of Genshin Impact, and this volume will soon come to an end, as I have decided that it will only cover Mondstadt, Liyue Harbor, and Inazuma. Primis will explore other nations during his next return.
That's all I have to say. Thank you!
