Afena felt like a great many things had just gone wrong, when in reality, it was just only two colossal things that were going astoundingly and incredibly wrong. First, guardians were supposed to adopt an appearance that would put unsuspecting prey at ease, much like the lukaliks would. Again, Afena's mind went to the water guardian, and how it had adopted the form of a beautiful woman.
Second, she'd hoped to avoid the subject of the sacrifices because she knew Rudsis would get riled up.
"What sacrifices?" asked Rudsis walking up the hillock to stand next to Afena.
It would have been useless and ridiculous to try and deviate the conversation. What had to happen would happen now, and it was best to adapt to it. A sick, sinking sensation grew in her stomach.
"Put away your sword," said the guardian. "I will not speak while threatened. And if you are not here to make offerings, then leave. I'll get to you eventually, unless you decide to honor me again."
