"We don't wish to sequester him," said Alis. "At least..." she chuckled, "not forever. We could keep him here, with us, for as long as it takes you to get the diamond. We'll give him back then, and would be more than glad to help you make the weapon you need to kill Treni."
Afena frowned, and thought of something. "Do you not have any diamonds?"
"No. None at all. Except the ones we use to cut other diamonds, of course. It was hard to get them before. Now, it's nearly impossible."
"Why?"
"I can tell you something certain, and then something I've only ever heard of. I don't know if the second thing is true."
"Even rumors are useful. It's good to prepare for the worse, but I wouldn't have any idea what the worse is if not by rumors."
Alis smiled pleasantly. "Again, another interesting concept I might take from you, my dear Inarenta. You would be a prolific writer, I think."
