To Be More, To Be Less

Alis knelt, holding a dagger in both her hands, offering it to Afena so the Inarenta could kill her any way she wished to.

Perhaps when she was younger, Afena would have, at the very least, used the dagger to pierce one of Alis' eyes, cut off one of her ears, and slash at her face multiple times.

At the very least.

Now, however, she simply took the dagger from Alis, bowed her head as a sign of thanks, got dressed with the clothes she'd been using as a pillow a few hours earlier, and walked around the grove, using the dagger to carve runes on trees.

"Are you well, witch?" Rudsis followed after her as she walked around. "What happened? What are those marks on your skin?"

Afena thought about showing Rudsis her tongue, but considered it unnecessary to be as crass as that. Instead, she gestured at her mouth, shook her head, and pointed at Alis to then resume marking the trees.

"Why won't you speak?" he asked.
