Chapter 10. Lynn's Layoff

~ ~ Several phones ringing on different office desks ~ ~

"I just got this fucken job, now I'm layoff. What will I tell mum?" I heavily fell on my chair "But if he didn't attack me, who did then?. God…" I cried.

It's better, I leave before Mr Diaz notices my presence in this building. I immediately stood up and parked a few stuff then I carried my bag and left.

I took a cab home.

"Sorry uncle, I couldn't do it. I saw her taking a cab and I could offer my help but I wasn't able to. She won't go unpunished for the humiliation she caused me this morning." Boris barged into Mr Diaz's office and explained.

"It's fine, it was a bad idea," Mr Diaz said. "Good, now you can fire her, right?" he said gaily with a victorious smile dispatched on his face.

"Never" Mr Diaz exclaimed.

"Why?" Boris widened his stares in shock. "You don't even know that girl, why do you keep protecting her like that?" then he yelled.

"Reduce your tone and get the hell out of my office before I throw you out." Mr Diaz hits the table. "Okay, ok… I'm leaving" he moved out.

"What are you doing home at this time of the day, don't tell me you have been fired?. You know I'm counting on your salary to pay part of the rent and to start paying your student loan" she chided without even giving me the time to offer a word.

I didn't know what to say, and my stomach had started grumbling and aching of hunger. I moved to the kitchen, she followed me and was still talking and it sucked.

"Lynne, talk to me. I just hope you haven't been fired, what I earn can't sustain us anymore." she said. "MUM, I wasn't fired!" I exclaimed.

"Ok, then go back to the office before they notice your absence. Do you know how many people are searching for that job, or do you even know how hard it was for me to secure you that?" she added.

"Fuck, this woman is a parrot. If I knew I would have stayed in the street, at least to have some peace" I murmured. "What did you just say?" she frowned.

"Never mind mum." I opened the pot. Omg, that scene which came out of it was to slay and relieving "When will this be ready, I can't wait" I asked while closing the the pot.

I moved to the fridge, I took out small container of yoghurt with a fat piece of cake and I started eating like a hungry animal. Mum was scared.

"What's wrong with you, Lynne?" she wondered aloud. "How? Why?" I effortlessly lifted my brow in awe. I didn't do anything wrong, is what I told myself at the moment.

"You seems to be hungrier than usual, I hope that you're not pregnant, we can't afford to feed another mouth?" she feared. "MUM!. Why will you think such a thing?" I furrowed my brows still while eating.

"Because you eat like a big. If you continue like this, all the foodstuff will be finished before the month-end and know that we can afford to be this careless. Why do you eat this much, are you pregnant?" she seriously asked. She wasn't joking.

"MUM…" I rolled my eyes.

"Yes, I mean it because when a girl starts having s*xual intercourse without any protection she gets pregnant or ends up with infections and in both cases, we don't have the means to solve them. So, abstinence…" she seriously explained.

"Mum, we won't have this conversion. I passe" I said.

"Good morning miss, Bertha" Nelly barged into the kitchen halting mum from talking. "The food is ready, you can eat. I need to rest" she moved to the parlour.

"You just saved my life. Can you imagine that Mum thinks I'm pregnant?" I cried out. "Haha, for that you need to have s*x with a man" she disregarded with a heavy laugher.

"Just because I spent a night out, just a night" I pouted.

"If I remember you left without even saying goodbye. You were with this dude what's his names again?…." she said thoughtfully. "Boris!" I replaced.

"Yea, your crush. How did it end?. Oh, perhaps mum is right and someone is pregnant in here, wow!" she got excited.

"Don't be silly, and reduce your voice before mum gets you. Nothing happened between us. Instead, something strange occurred…" I frowned.

"Tell me more then" she was so agitated. "I don't know where to start from, it's a very long awful story" I whimpered.

"I have all the time. Jackson left town yesterday evening so now I have all the time on earth. Go on, I'm all ears, I have all the time for you, I'm even thinking of spending the night here. No, I can't I have an appointment very early tomorrow morning. Anyway just go on" she deciphered.

"Yea, because I always came second" I scowled. I was done dishing out food, I carried the tray to my bedroom.

"Don't forget to bring back does plates down, I keep telling you that…" mum screamed as she saw me moving to my room with a tray. She was laying on the couch watching the television.

"That's not true Lynne don't be dramatic, you will never come second. You are my best friend, my sister" she followed me into the room.

"Lies!" I sat with my legs folded in bed and placing the tray in front of me. She sat next to me while taking a glance at the tray "Is this food not too much for us?" she exclaimed.

"And who you told you it's for, — us?…" I waved my hands as I was speaking. "You're panning to eat all this alone?. Haha… You can barely finish two pieces of pizza." she sneered.

"People do change baby" I started eating. "Wow, your change is only on food?. Why don't you change your social life and start interacting with people?" she worried.

"I was at your office a few minutes ago, I saw Brandon and we discussed a bit. He told me about your layoff. Why don't you date him, he's a nice dude." she said and I was busily eating.

Wow, it was delicious as usual, mum is a damn good cook. I told myself in my mind so I looked at Nelly's mouth shaking but for me, no sound was coming out of it. It's like the food was blocking sound from entering my ears.

"Lynne, Lynne. Damn, I'm talking to you, Lynne" she tapped me on the shoulders and this brutally snatches me out of my thoughts. "Why don't you date him?" this sentence is the only thing I heard.

"Date who?" I wondered aloud. "Brandon?" she retorted. "Brandon?" I widened my stare in shock. "Yes, Brandon your colleague at the office" she insisted.

"No, I'm not interested in dating my colleagues" I continued eating. "But you have a crush on Boris, colleagues?. Wow!… Anyway, I won't force you to tell me what happened that evening" she ended with a curious stare glued on me.

"… As we were dancing, he took me behind the park…" I started explaining.

"Behind the park?" she freaked out and her reaction scared me. "That place is hunted by evil spirits and it banned to the public. A lot of dead bodies have been found there" she explained with a horrified tone.

"I was never aware of this, no wonder all these strange things happened to me that night, so far it was the was the worse day of my life" word honestly escaped my mall. "Which strange things, go on?" she asked and I continued to explain.

"This should stay only between us… I nearly lost my life that night"
