Chapter 44 : Knock Us Out

Asher's POV

"Soldiers are closing in. We've got to split up," Malcolm said.

"No, we just got back together," I argued. I took Vika's hand and kissed the back of it.

After she shifted back, she looked a little messy under the wrapping of her long coat. But she wasn't badly injured, and that's all I cared about.

"You two don't have to split up," Malcolm teased, winking at me.

"We should divide into two groups. One to distract the soldiers while the others get away to the rebel base," Magda offered. Her face was still wet with tears from Devi leaving, making her wet cheeks puffy and red.

"That's a horrible idea! We should go together." Vika argued. She ran from me and grabbed her mother's hands.

"Don't worry, we'll all meet up at the base," Magda assured, touching Vika's cheek.

My heart warmed. The two of them were still so close. After everything their family had been through— everything my family had put them through—that was amazing.
