Chapter 10: A Journey Begins

The sound of something searing flooded into Damon’s dreams, prompting him to awake early the following morning. He opened his eyes to see Adelaide standing over the fire, pouring the rest of the water out her canteen onto the flame that they had let run throughout the evening.

Damon sat up, stretching out the kinks in his back that had occurred from sleeping in a corner of the cave. Adelaide made her way to him, dropping a bag at his side and pushing it closer to him with her foot.

“We need to get moving,” she said, taking a hold of her own knapsack and tossing it over her shoulder. “It’s almost daylight and the Ascender’s most likely know I’ve fled. Luckily, they don’t know where. If we go now, we can get far enough ahead of them before they figure it out.”

“You’re sure this Royal Shift place is where you need to go?” Damon asked, slipping his arms through the strap holes, and adjusting the positioning.

“No,” Adelaide replied. “Except I know it’s safe.”
