Chapter 11: Conversations in the Dark

Damon glanced up at the blue sky which was covered in cottony white clouds and birds moving in a choreographed melody. His shoes pressed into the dirt as he followed Adelaide’s lead in both line and conversation. She had descended into quietness, and for a minute, Damon had only heard the low peck of a nearby hummingbird on the nape of a tree.

He had hoped that the communication had died out for the time being so he could avoid as many questions as possible, only he should’ve known that that wasn’t going to be the case.

“Do you have any other family?” Adelaide questioned after a beat.

“Just my parents,” he noted, bringing his attention back to her, but keeping his answers to a minimum.

“Oh,” she muttered in an almost whisper. “So, say you become Alpha…who would take over for you?”

“Well, my son, I suppose, if I ever have one.”

Adelaide kept to herself and even though he couldn’t see her face, Damon could almost feel her processing her thoughts.
