Chapter 21: A Brush With Death

Everything around Damon began to grow hazy and it took a while for his brain to really process what had happened. But when it did, searing hot pain kicked in and he felt his legs start to give. Adelaide caught him as he fell back, and her hands quivered as she hovered over the hilt of the knife. She muttered a few words that grew more incoherent as time passed on—her voice beginning to sound as if it was in a distant, empty room. Each breath he took was short and staccato-like, which only created an agonizing pain to shoot through his entire body.
