Chapter 18: Deceiving Appearances

Sunlight beat down on Damon’s scalp, prompting sweat to trickle down his forehead to his prominent jawline. Since they left Hailing Cove, neither of them had spoken a word to each other. Adelaide kept closer to Damon then she had when they first set out from the caves, but she mainly focused her attention on the plains ahead, checking the old map every so often to ensure that they were headed in the right direction.

Damon didn’t know what to say because he barely knew how to feel. How do you tell someone you were preparing to kill them only minutes before you shared an intimate moment? Not only that, but knowing what he knows now about the Ascenders and Kal, how could he continue with his mission?

His boots crunched down on the grass, outdoing the sound of his rising pulse in his head. Adelaide let out a sigh and looked up from the map again.

“Everything okay?” Damon spoke up, his voice quaking slightly. The last thing he needed was to make this worse in any way.
