Chapter 24: Enemy on the Horizon

Vix and Caine trekked along Cervil’s Way for the rest of the day. Vix noticed their surroundings change drastically the farther they went.

The soft and rolling green lands around them started to crack and flatten, peeling back from the stony bones of the earth like old scabs. The songs of thrushes and warblers were replaced by the shrieks of gulls, which soared eternally overhead, wobbling precariously on gusts of salty wind.

Finally, in the distance, Vix spotted Delmin. The city had none of the sweeping spires and towers of Belgrave, but it made up for it with sheer sprawling size.

Squat, sturdy buildings tumbled over the coastline in a stone wave of dwellings, broken here and there by the steeples of churches. Beyond, peering from behind the iron heads of clangorous old bells, the blue glitter of the ocean was visible.
