Chapter 25: To Fight or Flee

The sea was a disc of pure gold, the setting sun sitting languidly atop the waves, by the time they reached the gates of the city. It was nothing like the massive, mechanized gate of Belgrave – just a wooden palisade, stone arch, and raised portcullis, which looked very old and unused.

“It looks like a good breeze might just tip the whole thing over,” Vix muttered.

“Do you see what I mean?” Caine responded. “If they didn’t have Belgrave protecting their landlocked side, Delmin would fall like a wobbly house of cards.”

Vix stayed close to him as they neared the gate. A rather bored-looking guard gave them a passing glance then waved them through.

Vix was equal parts excited and terrified. She had never been anywhere outside of Belgrave. It felt less like she was setting foot in a new city. It was more like a whole new frontier.
