Chapter 30: Bargaining

Vix tried to hide her excitement. “My friend and I are new to the Dry Works. What can you tell us?”

“Tell you?” Tala readjusted her shawl with a rustle like beetle’s wings. “I could tell you much about many things.” One beady eye glanced askance at Vix. “If I was so inclined.”

Vix immediately reached into her pocket and pulled out a handful of coppers, glad that she had convinced Caine to part with some money beforehand.

Tala laughed airily. “I could find as much pocket change by fishing around in the gutter.”

Vix did not even blink. She had expected this. “Worth a try,” she told the old woman with a grin. “I should have known you’d be too savvy not to know what your knowledge is worth.”

She fished three silver coins out of her pocket and added them to the pile of money. They glinted out like three full moons in the dark.
