Chapter 32: Pity

“I’m sorry!” Caine said, rubbing his arm furiously from where Vix had hit him. “I’m sorry, I did mean to tell you! But we were separated in the street and I was wondering where to find you, when this very friendly fellow invited me in for a drink. Practically dragged me in for one, really...”

“Do you realize how worried I was?” Vix asked in a deadly soft whisper. “I thought you had died!”

Caine looked bemused. He opened his mouth and then shut it again, as though changing his mind.

“What?” Vix demanded.

Caine hesitated, then said, “I realize I’m only sticking my hand further into the hornet nest... but you didn’t need to be worried about me. I mean, dying is the worst thing that could happen. And we both know it doesn’t have much of an effect on me.”

Vix pulled her lips back in a tight line. She refused to let him make her feel stupid. “I promised myself that I would not let you die again if I could help it. I refuse to watch that happen again.”
