She could see that it was not helping Belkin to be any more forthcoming about what he meant. “Immortality is immortality,” she said in as level a voice as she could manage. “For a thousand years, Caine has come back every time he’s been killed. Why should that change now?

Clasping his hands together, Belkin glanced around the room. He seemed to be looking for something. His eyes brightened suddenly. Leaning over, he seized something that was resting on the closest table.

“Perhaps this will help to explain,” he said, holding it up.

Vix found herself staring at a green, somewhat moldy apple. She gave the professor a worried look. “Er...”
