Chapter 38: Shifting Shadows

The small room rang with Eliah’s words. Caine tried to keep his face perfectly motionless, despite the thrill of disbelief that went through him.

“What are you talking about?” he asked, trying to sound confused. “My name is Edgar. Edgar Benner.”

Eliah just looked at him flatly, gray eyes shining in the light of the lantern. Caine’s own eyes flicked back and forth. He could not decide whether it was safer to meet that dull gaze or not.

At last, Eliah sighed, breaking the silence. Then, abruptly, he sat down on the dirty ground across from Caine. His fine, black clothes were immediately covered in grime and dust. Caine nearly winced. But Eliah did not notice at all.

He scooted forward until he was just a foot away from Caine, legs crossed. “That’s very funny... Edgar.” He laughed lightly as though to prove it, but the mirth did not ever touch his eyes. “That’s very funny.”
