Chapter 49: Reunion

A muted voice fell on Vix’s ears, coming from an eternity away. She tried to open her eyes, but her muscles refused to obey. It felt like a wagon was sitting on top of her chest. She could not breathe.

Yet this did not trouble her very much. She was too bone-tired to care about anything. Her body felt like it had just been picked up by a giant and tossed into the sky.

“Vix! Vix!”

There was that voice again. It was accompanied by a persistent shaking of her shoulder. Her entire aching body felt like it was being whipped back and forth by the motion.

Vix raised a hand weakly and tried to slap the hand that held her shoulder away. A fly would probably not have even twitched at the blow.

“Vix!”

‘Leave me alone,’ she thought, exhausted. ‘Why can’t you just let me rest?’

Her consciousness began to slip away. The shaking and shouting intensified, but she ignored it. She was still not breathing.

‘Let me sleep. Just for a minute more...’
