Chapter 50: A Peaceful Moment

After another long and wonderful moment, they broke apart. Vix was somewhat breathless. Caine was grinning from ear to ear.

As one, they burst out laughing. Vix’s insides were dancing with giddy joy. Caine shared her feelings. She could not believe it; she wanted to sing it from the rooftops.

Most importantly of all, he was alive.

“I was so worried,” Vix said softly after the laughter had subsided. “I looked everywhere for you, Caine. I’m so sorry it took me so long to get here.”

A shadow seemed to cross Caine’s face for a moment. Then it vanished. “Don’t apologize,” he said firmly. “Please, don't."

Vix leaned forward. “What did happen, Caine?”

He told her. Vix listened in horror as he described what Eliah Sharpe had done to him – the barbaric pit fights and the cruel experiments. She cursed herself again. Whatever Caine might say, she might have been able to save him from such a horrible fate. If only she had been quicker.
