Chapter 52: The Belly of the Beast

There were no sights or sounds which Vix could make out as she descended the ladder. All she could feel were her hands upon the wooden rungs and her heart hammering its way up into her throat.

Her astonishment grew the farther she went. This was a veritable tunnel, burrowing down straight through the ground. Vix wondered what it could possibly have been made for. ‘An old mine shaft?’ she thought. It was a strange sort of thing to put beneath a once-prestigious manor house.

There came a soft thud and grunt below her. “Vix.” Caine’s whisper rebounded up through the dark. “I reached the bottom.”

“Hold on.” Vix took the last few rungs down. Something brushed up against her in the dark, making her jump, but it was only Caine. His hands blindly sought her waist, which he held firmly as she stepped awkwardly off the ladder.

“Thanks,” Vix breathed, facing toward the direction she thought he was. A sudden wave of fear and frustration overcame her. “I can’t see a thing!”
