Chapter 53: Revelation

“Vix!” Caine roared. He ran, sliding into a crouch beside her. His face was a mask of horror.

“Vix,” he said again in a strangled voice. “Oh, no, no, no. Please, no!”

Lying flat on her back on the cold stone ground, Vix tried to tell him not to worry, to get himself to safety. But nothing came out. A wave of coughs racked her body, pain pounding into her with each one. The spot above her hip was the worst; it felt like it was burning up.

“So you finally made it here, Caine,” the Riverman said. It sounded like there were ten of him talking. His voice rebounded again and again, a metallic horror that went on without end. “You certainly took your time.”

Vix saw Caine’s face change. The blank shock transformed into hateful rage. He turned, pistol already in his hand, and fired at the noise. There was a high-pitched clang of metal, followed by a surprised grunt.
