Chapter 131

Unfortunately, my guards hadn't gone far.

"Back in," they even lowered their spears. I'd only made it beyond the back of the wagon, which had rewarded me with the view of more covered wagons huddled together between two cliffs footed by gravely slopes.

"What's happening?" I asked.

But they just jutted their spears forward. I got the feeling they had been warned ahead of time not to touch me, should I send my magic to break them.

I considered trying anyway, if only for a moment, because when I tried to reach out my magic across the space between us, it only made my hands glow and the guards rush close enough to put the spear tips against my belly.

Thus, I ended up back in the wagon, frustrated enough to start biting my hands. I either hadn't healed enough to push my magic over distance or I needed a near-death situation to fuel it.
