Chapter 148

Thus, the door banging open jarred me out of the deepest level of sleep. I couldn't even process who had entered, shouting my name, until they'd impatiently scooped me out of my bed and dropped a mask into my lap.

"Dulcet?"

"An army's coming. We have to hide."

...Huh?

Why the hell would an army want to come here of all places? Not that it wasn't a nice place to live and all, but...yeah. And then there was that whole promise of Nehcor that this would be my place of safety and refuge and all that.

But Dulcet had already run out the door. Warm evening sunlight burst across my face, blinding my scratching eyes. Startled, and not all that trusting of the arms holding me, I clutched about his neck for dear life.

"Hold on! I can walk--my boots--"
