All my irritation with Gus vanished when he pulled back the covers and slid into place next to me. The bed had once fit the previous owner and his late wife, but I doubted either of them had been as big as Gus. Even so, as long as neither of us tossed and turned too much tonight, it was a comfortable fit.
He opened his arms and I didn't have to move. The dip of the bed made it so I naturally slid into them and got tucked against his chest. The contact melted away three years of lonely nights, and his warmth banished the memories of a cold bed keeping me up. I sighed happily and nuzzled my nose into the hollow of his throat.
"Mmm, Gus Gus, Gussy Gus."
"What weird mantra are you chanting?"
"Hee, don't! You're talking tickles my nose." It sent vibrations down his throat, especially in his adam's apple, which sat atop the bridge of my nose.
"Aw, now that's tempting, but sleep time now." He patted my head. "The army's leaving in the morning."
