Chapter 213

Anything gained without effort loses value.

It was one of the great lessons of life one of my aunts passed on to me by frequently falling for pyramid schemes and 'get rich quick' scams.

Thus, even after praying, though I felt hopeful again, I still found myself sitting mindlessly on the mossy floor of the forest, drifting in and out of focus. It was human nature to flee pain rather than face it, and I hurt. Shame, fear, pining, regret, and a medley of other emotions urged me just to go back into the fog, back to my imagined stream in the night where I didn't exist and nothing mattered. It would be so easy. And standing where I was, barefoot, dirty, and hungry in a forest, with a fishy smelling dragon, wasn't exactly encouraging.

But that fishy dragon gave me all the hope that I needed to try. Hope that I'd one day reach my dreams of family and happiness.
