Chapter 219

'Brief' was the key word.

We woke up to a sun turned red by smoke and a hazy gray sky. I listened to some folk wonder to each other if they should even try to tend to their crops today or get to work widening the irrigation trench in hopes the line of water could somehow save them. They had already chopped down the trees around the farmland, but the wind could carry sparks across any distance.

It was Master Joe who put a firm end to this discussion.

"The fire is growing in the opposite direction," he said. "I just got the word from Entry. Even if it changes directions, we have plans in place for this. Earth, fire, wind, we got 'em all, weak or not, so stop worrying and get working."

The tension in the air lessened and the relief was visible on the people's faces.
