Chapter Twenty | Alexander

I check my phone for the tenth time in the past hour, disappointment filling my chest when I realize there are no notifications. I set it down and sigh. I’ve texted Avalon quite a few times in the past two days with no responses at all. I know I let her down when I couldn’t come to the hospital, but I also know my secret is too dark to share with her.

I've contemplated going to see her at night, but the visiting hours end right before the sun goes down. There's genuinely no way I can be there for her without putting myself in severe danger.

If I told Avalon why I couldn't be with her, she could react in a number of ways, even ones that would lead me down the same dreadful path as Nina and ultimately end in my death. No matter how much I want to be holding her hand right now, the universe is against it.
