Chapter 24: When Can I Come Back To You?

She felt unrest when she thought he may have seen her every action.

But when she tried to look at him, she immediately lowered her head and didn't dare to look again.

He must have been born with eyes capable of threatening others, even without looking at them. He was sitting so far away from her that she couldn't even see his face, and she wasn't sure if he could see her, but she felt his sharp and cold sight everywhere. No matter where she sat down or walked, near or far, she couldn't escape his intangible but pressed sight.

Officers around her come and go. Beautiful ladies would smile elegantly, and men would invite them to dance.

Although the ladies would never marry these low-rank officers and officers would not have a celebrity wife, everyone was nonresistant flirting or even having a one-night stand.

After a while, even Zach danced with some director's daughter and returned refreshed with a fragrant scent.

"She invited me to drink." Zach gave everyone the "you know" glance that all men understand and smiled obscenely.

Zach looked at Emerald, who was silent, "Little wild kitten, don't be jealous, my heart is still yours."

Emerald topped up her goblet without saying a word.

After sitting for a while, the men were out seducing women, and in between coming back to the sofa, some looking complacent and others smiling weirdly, it seems that everyone had found their evening entertainment.

"I don't think it's good if all of us go out tonight and leave the little wild kitten alone." One of them suggested.

"Little wild kitten, just say whom you want to accompany you tonight."

"No...." Another opposed.

"Who says I am alone tonight?" Emerald suddenly stood up.

She had to stand up.

Kenzo's eyes appeared to never fall on her but nonetheless penetrated and surrounded her everywhere. She felt uneasy and knew she had to take action.

Zach noticed her expression and looked in the same direction.

Everyone was shocked and fell silent as they recognized the person whom Emerald and Zach were looking at.

Besides the wide stairs to the luxurious hall, Kenzo was sitting on a modest sofa, with a cigar in his fingers burning relentlessly. Under the bright light, his tall figure was cast in a gold shadow, making him even more unapproachable.

Even though they couldn't see his face, his silhouette on the reclining sofa, his long legs, and his arms resting on the back of the sofa was enough to impress everyone. His silver sleeve button was shining in the light, making him look even more mysterious.

Two soldiers were standing quietly in the corner close to him. If not looking carefully, no one would even see them.

His identity was obvious. Different from these young and naïve soldiers, he looked cold, calm, and unapproachable.

"The Security Director?" someone sighed, "I heard that he is only going to dance with the female deputy mayor tonight."

"Will you bet?" Emerald suddenly asked.

"Bet on what?"

"Bet he will dance with me."

****

The party was held in the mayor's ballroom. The bright floor was filled with beautiful music and colorful lights.

Some people had been dancing all night trying to attract other people's attention, while others were the focus of attention even though they had spent their night sitting in the same spot.

Kenzo Lane was one of those who had all the attention without trying.

And Emerald, as the only female officer, too.

Therefore, when the pretty small officer suddenly stood up and walked directly to the Security Director who was sitting in the opposite corner, many people started looking at them.

Ignoring everyone's attention, Emerald walked straight in front of the Security Director, smiling at him.

"My lord, may I have the honor?" She said with a clear voice and a smile, even though the blush on her face gave her away.

For a few seconds, he didn't respond. Emerald didn't know whether he was surprised that she would come so close to him in public, but he then stood up and reached out his hands to her. "It's my honor, second lieutenant."

Emerald put her hands in his. Holding her back with his other hand, he took her to the dance floor. Emerald felt a little surprised when his callused finger pulps touched hers, which were also not smooth anymore.

The few people in front of them stepped away and stared at them. Kenzo didn't slow his steps and took her straight to the center of the dance floor.

She could barely breathe because he had put his hand around her waist and pushed her so close to him that her chest and waist were touching his cold black uniform. He had to be in control even when he was dancing.

"Little wild kitten?" He whispered. She looked up in embarrassment and saw his pretty face in the silver light. His black eyes were like an ancient well with no waves. He was as cold as she remembered, but he was brighter than she recalled.

"My lord," her voice is full of expectation, "when can I come back to you?" Kenzo didn't answer immediately.

His big hands were sliding along her waist over her uniform, just like his eyes measuring the girl who had changed completely.

The soft shoulder-length hair was now all tied up neatly and pushed under the flat cap. Her face was no longer pale but blushed with vitality. The two looming red little scars bore witness to her close fight with the horrifying Zergs.

Her eyes unconsciously showed her fears and avoidance in his memory. But now, even though she still looked humble and nervous, her eyes were bright and clear again as if they were washed by spring water.

She has been staying with those tall and young officers since she entered the room. She stood out from those men, but they seemed quite natural with each other. Obviously, they had accepted her and even considered their words and behaviors in front of her.

It seems that she has been having a great time over the past six months. "Harvey will inform you." He says dryly.

Emerald nodded and followed his moves silently.

"Who is that man?" Kenzo suddenly asks.

Emerald turned around with him and saw Zach sitting against the wall and watching them with mixed feelings.

"He's Zach Williams." She answered naturally. "The captain of the air force."

"Do you remember what I said?"

"...Yes, I have always kept your words in my mind." After finishing the sentence, she saw Zach putting down his glass and walking directly towards them.
