  Present Time

  “F-k,” Yelena pinched her lip between her teeth. “Up the stairs, third door to the left. I’ll send someone up soon to check on you.”

  “Thank you, lass,” he put his hand on the small of the woman’s back, and her elbow in the other hand and started helping her up the stairs. “Could you send up some wine and refreshments? The children haven’t eaten recently,” he added over his shoulder.

  Yelena looked down at her dress, and reconsidered the fragile, expensive dresses that Sylvin had brought her… But one of those would not have survived the wagons. She shrugged it on, turning to the hall.

  Sylvin had sent Corin to fetch the Fae mages and healers that had arrived with Diersen, and now four mages and two healers moved amongst the injured. She oversaw the washing of wounds and application of bandages, and she did not know how long it was until she paused to brace her hands against her lower back and stretch.
