Chapter 24

  Present Time

Yelena woke and stared blankly before her, wondering, for a brief blissful moment, why she felt so raw - her lungs tired and heavy within her, her throat sore, her head throbbing, her lips cracked, and her eyes swollen.

  And then she remembered.

Sylvin lay over her, weighing her into the mattress, his face against her back, as if in their sleep she had continued their fight of waking, with her seeking to squirm her way free of him, and him using his greater size and weight to physically hold her down.

She was trapped beneath him, her heartbeat picking up a panicked rhythm, her breath losing rhythm and setting into the deep drags of hysteria.

She focused on drawing in and releasing her breath, concentrated on keeping her body relaxed beneath his and began, carefully, to move out from beneath him, almost achieving freedom.

“Yelena,” he breathed her name, and she froze.
