"orty... hey Shorty!" My mind snaps back to the present and I see Luci looking up at me. "That nickname still sucks." Luci grins at me before pointing at the door. Seeing what she was getting at I nodded and we walked out of the room. "So you did loop the cams right?" Luci nods and puts her hands up at me making grabby motions. Rolling my eyes I bend down and let her climb onto my back, "Luci, the almighty, getting a piggy-back ride by a lowly mortal. How shameful." I smirk at her and she pouts, hitting my back. "Oh no, the pain. If this assault continues I don't think my arms will be able to hold you~" Wide eyed, she stops hitting me and rests her head on my shoulder. We walk the rest of the way back to the dorm in silence.
When we get there I reach for the door... "*BAM* AH, Fuck! My nose! Who runs out a door that fast?!" Looking down I see a dazed Ruby holding her head. "Rubes, you gotta watch where you're going. You almost killed her." Shaking her head, Ruby looks up and sees me holding my nose with Luci laughing like a gremlin on my shoulder. "O-oh, I'm so sorry! I was opening the door and wasrunningbecauasewearealmostlateand, we're almost late!!" Standing up she ran off in the direction of the classrooms, soon followed by Weiss and Yang. "Are you... okay?" I nod and let go of my nose, I press on it a few times to make sure its not broken and sigh in relief when it's not. "Yea, I'm fine. Now lets get to class Blake, I also gotta talk to Ozpin about this goblin on my back." Chuckling, me and Blake make our way to class with Luci now ignoring us. Worth it.
_______
"Monnnsterss! Deeemonns... Creatures of the night! The creatures of Grimm are called by many names, but I merely refer to them as prey!" Oh end my misery... who knew school would be so boring? My team decided to sit in the front row, but I took a seat in the back. Luci has taken to sitting on my lap, burying her face in my chest, and sleeping. I should join her in the realm of dreams... and so I rest my head on hers and close my eyes. But I didn't get to fall in the land of blissful sleep, as the teachers voice rang through my ears again.
"A-and so shall you! Upon graduating from this esteemed academy! Now, back to what I was saying. Vale, as well as the other three kingdoms, are safe havens in an otherwise treacherous world! Our planet is filled with creatures that would want nothing more than to tear their fangs into your skin. And that's where we come in! Huntsmen! Huntresses~ Individuals who have sworn to protect those who cannot protect themselves! From what are we saving them from? Why, the very world!" If I can't sleep, neither should Luci! Especially when I have to deal with this guys voice. Raising my hands I place them on Luci's sides and strike!
"Ayyyp?!" She jumps up in surprise, causing all the students to stare at her. Too embarrassed to even glare at me she hides her head into my shoulder while whispering death threats. "You wouldn't actually kill me. You care too much about me, my sweet little demon... also don't breath on me please, your breath reeks of blood." Her mumbling comes to an end, now too embarrassed to talk and I just grin to show my epicaricacy while the teacher resumes his job.
"That is what you are training to become. But first: A story. A tale of a young, handsome man... Me! When I was a boy..."
"SLATE!" Sitting up straight I blink my eyes open and look around to see the class looking at me. I bring my attention to the teacher who was looking at me. "Welcome back to class Ms. Slate, we were just discussing who should be the one to fight against this beast I caught while defending a village before." I guess I did fall asleep. "And seeing as you're so confident in your skill that you think you can sleep the entire time, why don't you come on down here and prove it." Ugh, couldn't he have just chosen Weiss. She clearly looks like she wants to fight.
I stand and walk onto the small stage i the classroom, "There won't be much of a fight professor. Are you okay with that?" He gives a firm nod and asks if I want to get my weapons. "That won't be necessary." He nods again and opens the cage. Out comes a boar looking Grimm, it has two long tusks that curl back towards it and bone armor all over its body. It looks around a bit before looking towards the nearest person, ignoring me like I knew it would. Not giving it a chance to attack the student, I charge at it and lean my body back while outstretching my right legs, as if I was going to do a back flip with my legs extended. My right foot, covered in my aura, strikes the unguarded underbelly of the Boarbatusk, launching it into the air.
I jump meeting it in the air, and lock my hands together above my head, before smashing down right above the armored bone plate it has on its face. Still in the air, I shift my weight to fall slightly faster and land on the Grimm's back before it could stand. I wrap my aura filled hands around its tusks and pull. As I put more and more force behind my attempt, the sound of bones snapping ring out. The Boarbatusk lets out a pained screech, before its throat gets punctured by its own tusk.
Rubbing my hands together as the Grimm starts flaking away, I look back at the professor who looks impressed and wary at the same time. "What a splendid fight! Using the enemy's weapons against them, genius! It appears we are indeed in the presence of a true Huntress-in-training. I'm afraid that's all the time we have today, make sure to read the assigned pages and stay vigilant. Class dismissed." Looking back at the team, I see Weiss scowling in my direction before she slams her hands down and storms out to the hall. 'Sheesh, whats her issue. Is she that mad that she didn't get to fight?'
Walking to my friends, I get tackled before I could make it to them. "Listen, I enjoy you being near me, but if you keep knocking me over I'm going to punish you Luci." Blinking up at me with her "innocent" yellow eyes, she ignores me and lets me stand to greet the others. "We still need to talk about what to do with Luci... and what exactly is a demon? Are they like what they are in the movies?" Of course my dear Blake would remember to ask. "How about we go back to the dorm, I'll answer there. After that I need to tell Ozpin and make him allow her stay here."
The walk back was silent expect for Luci humming some tune while skipping next to us. Ruby got sidetracked when we were walking and said she would catch up with us later. Throwing open the door, I see the room is different. The beds are now put up into bunk-beds, with a more than questionable construction. The top bunk on the left is covered by a white sheet, and is being help up by ropes... The bed on the right is worse, being help up by books.
Yang jumps up to the top bunk on the right, and Blake crawls onto the bed under it. I sit on the red circular rug in the center of the room and Luci takes her spot on my lap. "So do you want to tell them, or..." I whisper to Luci who nods and takes a breath. "As I said before, I'm a demon. Demons aren't always like the ones seen in books or shows. The only major difference between demons like me and people like you is that we have the same powers you call semblances that don't run off of soul power. Instead it runs off of peoples belief in you. So lets say a demon was only believed in by one person their power wouldn't be as strong as it could be, but that also depends on how much they believe in them. Slate has been the only one to believe in, and trust, me in a long time. But she places so much trust in me that my semblance is still strong, as seen before when I used it against you all for making fun of me. Any questions?"
"So uhh, why aren't there more of you around?" The atmosphere suddenly got darker as I felt Luci get colder. She doesn't like this topic, and shut down anytime I asked her. I only got to know part of it when I ignored her till she told me. She opens her mouth, her eyes covered by her hair as the wind picks up despite the window being closed. Her voice comes out scratchy, "Well that-" I cover her mouth before she starts. "-Is a topic for another time. Lets not make this too deep Yang, I get that you're curious but this is not the time nor the place. Okay?" Nodding, Yang and Blake are confused as they didn't pick up on the change of atmosphere.
I grab Luci's hand and walk to the kitchen. "We'll be right back, I just need to talk to Luci for a sec." I place Luci on the table so that she would be face to face with me. "Luce, there's no need to hold yourself back, it's just me and you in this room right now. You don't have to worry about them seeing you, I locked the door." At first she just stands there with her hair covering her eyes, but then she sniffles. I raise my hand and brush her hair aside, and see her eyes watering. "I- I'm s-sorry, I know sh-shouldn't g-g-get upset about it a-anymore. It's just... I don't... s-sorry."
"Shh, shh. It's OK, I get it. Kinda. Just know that you don't have to answer anything you don't want to, and that I'm here for you." Her eyes widen and tears come pouring out while she smiles at me. "When'd y-you get so s-soft?" I click my tongue and squint my eyes at her before smiling. "C'mere." She nods and jumps off the table making me catch her. I stand there, holding her, until her sniffles stop. "The reason I hate hearing that question... is because I- remember when I told you demons and people stopped coexisting?" She asks, to which I nod. "Well, the king who was slain was my father... when he died I was so lost. For a long time I didn't do anything, and the people started to hate me because I didn't do anything to help them when the underworld was deteriorating. They- they started sending people to try and kill me as a way to get revenge. I ran, and ran, until I found a way to escape. That being you. I cannot thank yo-" I put an end to her thanks by running my hand down her face.
"What are you thanking me for? You saved my life right after, so we're even. Besides, I don't know what i'd do without you Luci. I don't show it often, but you mean a lot to me. Even more than Raven at this point. Now, lets go and get some sleep. I'm exhausted." She nods and we walk back out to the bedroom. I roll onto Blake's bed, pushing her over so that Luci would have enough room to either sleep on top of me or in-between us. She chose the middle. "Goodnight Slate..." I look over at Luci and see her starting to sleep making me smile before I closed my eyes.
