Chapter 72: What is Left of Those Who are Left

Eleonore’s POV

The hot spray of the shower had turned cold a long time ago, but I couldn’t will myself to get out of the shower. The harsh thundering against my ears was enough to distract me, for some time, about everything that had just happened outside of this bathroom.

Distinctly I could make out the sound of Rhett, Hayden, and my aunty in the living room. They were talking, but I couldn’t tell about what. Honestly, I don’t think I could bring myself to care either way. Eventually, my back began to pain from the harsh cold water hitting it, and I willed myself to get out of the shower and wrap a towel around my body. By the time I had secured it around my top half, I had heard a knock on the door.

“Eleonore?” It was Rhett’s voice. “Are you…” I heard him pause as though he were reconsidering his words. Was he going to ask me if I was alright? “Can I come inside?” Was that better? Did I want to see him?

Did I want to see anyone?
