The way back home was quiet and somber, Kaveh a willing hostage in all that had been going on around him. He said nothing as we approached the pack house, nothing as I led him down into the basements, and nothing as I closed the iron bars around him. But he smiled at me, deviously, as though there was a joke I wasn't a part of.

There was a wicked moment where for an instant I felt no better than the council members who had trapped those innocent people beneath their Citadel. If it were only the plugs and pipes that Kaveh was missing now, what made me any different from those people who I had detested so much?
