On the drive down to Sweetgrass Island, Brooke had more than enough time to think about all she’d learned about Ellis and his family. The ancestry website hadn’t been much help beyond Ellis’ birth certificate. She’d even tried to search for Raymond Ellis and Raymond Ellis, Jr.
But there was nothing. She tried to remind herself that their living records would have been close to a hundred years old and if they didn’t have living relatives that put them in the database, then it would be nearly impossible to find anything.
She took a break from the search to sit with Aunt Rayah and a cup of coffee.
“How bad are your nightmares?” she asked when Brooke had settled into her seat. “I could hear you the other night. It was like that when you first got here as a child, like you are fighting in your sleep. But you never seemed to remember in the morning.”
“They are getting worse ever since I went to therapy to try and remember my past and then got put in jail because of Wayne.”
