Everything was a darkness with no end as Brooke tried to fight her way back to consciousness. To find a way back to her body. She could hear voices as she drifted in the darkness, but not the ones she was used to. So, she knew that it wasn’t a dream.
Then came motion. She was moving. She was lying down and moving, maybe in a car. Then came flashes of memory, the last thing she remembered, pain, and before that, Nathan as a wolf in the road. Then William injected her.
‘If it doesn’t kill you, it will make you stronger.’
That’s what he had said. But she wasn’t dead. How long ago was that? Where was she?
Why had the car stopped moving?
Someone strong lifted her up and cradled her close. The discomfort of a needle in her arm and the buzzing of machines around her. She must be in a hospital. More voices shouting but unintelligible. Was it a foreign language?
Where was Nathan? Where was Aunt Rayah? Where was she? Was she dying?
