Chapter 24: Nevena

My face was still wet when the door opened and Katarina walked in her room. When she saw me on her bed, her face turned murderous and smoke started coming out of her skin. But then she saw my tear-stricken face and her expression softened.

“Get off my bed,” she ordered me, but the usual dislike and hatred were gone from her tone. She waved her hand, and my bed appeared. I got up, and sat on it.

Katarina handed me a handkerchief, which I gladly accepted and I used it to wipe the tears and blow my nose.

“I know it’s none of my business,” she said. “But, why are you slobbering all over my pillow?”

“It’s nothing,” I said, but that tightness in my chest pressed on my soul again and suddenly I wanted to cry again.

“Oh great, here come the waterworks again,” said Katarina and then I was crying again, like the stupid little girl that I am. Stupid and trusting.

But something completely unexpected happened.
