Chapter 26: Ivan

Dragomir, Nenad, Stefan and Vladislav surrounded Nevena, and all four of them were looking at her with insatiable hunger in their eyes.

Blood is provided for us here in the Midnight Garden, but it is not the same as drinking directly from the source, when it’s still warm and fresh. Magic keeps the blood in the Midnight River as fresh as it can, but it’s still cold and comes from animals. And us, vampires… well, we get hungry at night.

“Guys, stand down,” I told my fellow vampires, but the thing is, Academy rules don’t apply in the Midnight Garden. I cannot tell other vampires what to do or not to do. And Dragomir and Nenad I consider as my friends.

But a human (or even half-human) coming voluntarily into the Midnight Garden… they knew Nevena was here before even I did. They smelled her. And they all wanted her. Her blood. I knew it.

“Ivan, what is going on?”

“Do I need to remind you about the Krov Svez?” I asked them.
