Chapter 35: Nevena

I got up, my head buzzing, and I scrambled away from the broken Sledovik pieces to the circle of students who were watching now as Ivan and Volkova were casting spells at an incredible force against one another.

It seemed like everybody had completely forgotten that the Academy was crumbling around us.

Suddenly, two arms caught me by my armpits and lifted me up. I looked to see who had helped me, if it was a friend or a foe, and I came face to face with the preternatural girl who splashed water in my face in this very room when the azhdaja ate me. I realized that I never thanked her or even knew her name.

“You better stand back, human,” she said to me, but smiled friendly. “Name’s Natasha.”

“Thank you,” I said. “Nevena.”

“I think you should sit down and watch from behind me. I can’t promise that Starosta Volkova won’t try to kill you as well.”
