Chapter 45: Nevena

Volkova had found a rog, and she was pointing it at both me and Ivan. She looked like she had been homeless for months, nothing unlike the powerful and self-assured woman I had met just a few days ago.

“I really hate you,” she said, looking at me. “I hate everything about you. You should’ve never existed in the first place.”

“Nevena, don’t do anything reckless,” warned Ivan, but I wasn’t planning to. I just wanted to know what had I done to make this woman hate me so much.

“I don’t understand it,” I said. “I really do not. What have I done to make you hate me so much? You didn’t even know who I was until three days ago. How can you hate someone who you don’t even know, not in the true sense of the word?”

Volkova made a weird snorting sound, as if she was choking on the words that she couldn’t wait to spit at me. “Didn’t know you? I’ve been keeping my eye on you for years, Nevena Pavlović. Ever since I found out you existed.”
