Nowhere to go

Things weren't simple as it seemed.

we had walked for two hours fighting the dead with improvised weapons along the way. we wanted to make it to the next stop where Mr. Kibali found a hideout before. But the roads ahead were blocked.

It seemed the dead were walking away from the city centre towards the outskirts. most of the main roads were packed.

We had to maneuver through the different paths to move. The kids were tired but were composed. Dan surprised me. I didn't know he could be calm despite everything that was happening.

The last experience I had with him was hectic.

It was getting dark and we still could not find a place.

"there are abandoned cars ahead. let's find a safe one to take refuge for the night." Old Kibali said pointing up ahead

The night had crept in with few roaming infected in the area.

James and Peter went in between the cars trying to look at them. I told the boys to follow behind me as I kept checking the cars as well.

In between, I encountered the undead trapped in the cars and put them out of their misery.

" Over here.” Mrs Kibali called out a few meters away. We rushed to her.

" look." She pointed out and I could not help but smile from ear to ear. The others rushed over as well and you could see their smiles

" This is great. I thought I was not going to make it tonight." Peter said

Inside one of the Salon car was boxes of food packed untouched and still good. Cans and cans of ready-made food was lying there in the middle of nowhere. It was one of what we needed at that time.

Mr. Kibali parted his wife's shoulder smiling

"I saw an abandoned school bus. It will serve us for tonight. " he said pointing up ahead a yellow old school bus.

" Boys lets go." I said to Javi and Dan. They looked tired but they did not complain at any time.

"Look what I found." Peter said happily to the group coming from a car on the left

" A torch and dozens of battery." he laughed out loud. At that moment . The food and the torch were treasures

"Nice. You won't have to cry out scared in the dark." I said

" You won't hold me tight when scared anymore." Javi joked laughing thinking of the situation

Peter had always been funny and pitiful. He was scared of the dark that he always scream when touched by anything small at night. The torch was a life saver to him

" Stop making fun of me. I am not scared at all. I just... anyway everyone is always scared." He didn't find the right words to explain himself

we all laughed at his embarrassed state. Even James chuckled at the situation. James and Old Kibali carried the boxes of food to the bus as we settled in.

for the last few weeks, we notice a trend that the undead were more active at night. To avoid any unnecessary trouble, we collected pieces of clothes in between the cars and cover the bus.

We didn't want to be the next target for the night. They seem more hungry at night

Taking few cans of food, we ate quietly making sure we don't make noise.

It was cold at night so cold that I felt like ice was penetrating deep I'm my soul

I had to make sure the boys have something warm. It was hard to sleep at night due to cold and also security. Though Old Kibali and James were awake manning, it was hard to sleep. It has become hard to truly sleep well during the last few week even if I forced it.

" Not able to sleep?' Mrs. Kibali asked from behind me. I jolted back to my thoughts. She chuckled looking at my behavior

" You know. Its hard to go through all this with kids."

" I am just worried. This thing is too much." I said deep in thoughts.

" I know. I am also worried about what will happen next. I don't know if we will survive or not." She said looking at her husband at the doorway

" I am worried about Javi and Dan. They are too young to go through this. I don't know what might happen tomorrow but I pray we survive till the end." I said looking at the deeply sleeping boys on the van floor

" Things will go well. I know the government is working to solve the issue" she said encouraging me.

Speaking of the government, I remembered my husband. I had not seen or heard from him in weeks.

We heard faint thumbing sound from a far. It seemed like a huge lorry was coming our way from a distance. I jolted on my feet so did Old Kibali and the others

" What's that?" I asked

" I don't know nut its not good." Old Kibali said.

" I think I should check it out." James said opening the van door slowly. He didn't close it for safety

I went to one side of the van and opened a space to look out. James walked in between the cars trying to look at the direction the sound was coming from. He only had a torch and the other area were dark. I could only see him

He looked panicked and ran back to us

" The monster's are coming. We have got to get out of here. They are too many. we cant fight them." he said too fast that I almost missed some of the words

Old Kibali got out to check and come back with a grim expression. Things are back. If we don’t get out of here we are doomed"

“Where should we go?" I asked. The kids were up the moment we heard the noises.

" Lets go"

" What about the foodstuff" Peter asked

" Your life is more important than the food." Mrs. Kibali answered him in hurry

" I guess so." Peter said shrugging his shoulders

We got out and ran for out lives.

" Which are we going" I asked the moment we started running through the cars back towards where we came from

“I don't know but we have to be as far from them as possible" Old Kibali said as we followed hurriedly behind him
