Ambush

Emma POV

I waited at the back of the warehouse for a signal from the Old Kibali and James Kemeli. My hand was ready on the staring wheel and the engine running. Everything seemed like a dream to me

I kept on looking outside through the side mirror. In the next few minutes, we could hear gun shots from the other side of the building. I was worried for them and us. I saw through the rear window Old Kibali and James running towards the truck from the residence.

Placing my foot on the brakes, I waited for them to jump in before stepping on it. I took the corner and turned towards the main entrance of the warehouse. The men were shooting randomly at the door and stopped to shoot on us when I took the corner. All their attention were on us. I almost ran through them.

They ran out of the way but they did not stop shooting at us. I rolled over some of the bodies on the road bumping as I drove. I drove past the gate damaging the whole gate and the fence. I didn’t care. If out life was in danger then there was nothing holding me down

Our safety was the first priority

Driving out of the premises, I followed the main road out of the area. I could see fleet of parked trucks at the side of the road and bides scattered everywhere at the side. It seemed people have fought hard for survival on this part of the road for the last few weeks we were coped up inside the warehouse

Driving past the abandoned trucks, I followed the route with few bodies as I went forward. I could see Mrs. Kibali was relaxed when her husband came back alive

“I told you not to worry. Old Kibali is wise and he places his safety above everything else.” She smiled at me in agreement

“I know” While talking. I saw a small kid standing in the middle of the road looking ahead. I stepped on the breaks out of instinct. The emergency break almost threw me out. Mrs. Kibali hit her head at the holding metal.

I walked out of the truck and walked to the girls in front of me.

“Young girl. Are you alright” I asked taking cautious and small steps ahead. I don’t why but the place gave me the creeps. I looked around and there was nothing except the tall grass at the side of the road covering large area on both side. We seemed to be passing between two large fields. What lied in there was a mystery to everyone that passed by the road

“Young girl. Are you okay?” I asked again this time being extra cautious. Since I called her the last time she didn’t speak nor twitch

“It’s okay. Don’t be afraid. We are here to take care of you.” I said to make her safe.” I stopped a step from her and stretched my hand from the back to turn her around

The moment I turned her, she jumped at me. I was scared. I didn’t expect that scene.

I pushed her away and stood to run. She ran after me. But at that moment, there was a shot in the air and the girl was shot when I turned to look

“Hands in air. Stop right where you are.” People emerged from the field armed with guns. Rods, machete and many of the different weapons I could not all of them.

I raise my hand in air shaking. I didn’t expect such an ambush. My hand was scratch from the fall a moment a go. The armed men and woman emergence was out of my expectation.

They surrounded the truck and got Mrs. Kibali out of the truck taking her gun. Some of the men also went at the back of the Truck

I could hear them talking to Old Kibali to get down

“So you were a number of you all along. Het down from in there” one of the men from the back. Old Kibali and the others got out of the truck their hands behind their heads. Dan and Javi were the last to get out. I was anxious for them

“Javi, Dan come here.” I called to them. They come to me their hands behind their head

“Look what we have here.” One of the men said as he looked at the back of the truck. The other men went in to see while the one holding the guns at us said rooted

“Whoa. Food. We won’t be hungry for the next few months” another man said looking at the back of the truck

“You guys were lucky. How did you find all this food?” he asked looking at us.

No one said anything. We were pushed to the side of the road. It was getting late the night was fast approaching. It would be very bad to stay out at night. According to what we observed, the undead were more active at night and attracted to noise. We had to do everything possible to make sure the night does not find us outside

“Everyone. Get in the truck.” The head lead man said to the others and they all ran to get at the back of the truck. Even the ones that held us captive did the same

“Wait. You can’t leave us here. Look we have kids with us. It’s getting late and they will attack us.” I tried to say to them using the kids but they did nothing

“Leaving you alive was enough compassion.” The lead man said signaling for the man driving to go. They drove past us

“Wait.” I shout at them but they did not speak nor care. They drove ahead of us

“Let them be. We should find somewhere to hide for the night things are chaotic out here.” Old Kibali said holding Dan’s hand while I took Javi’s hand. James and Peter stood aside in bewilderment

“What are we going to do now? We don’t have anything with us. Nothing” James said in frustration

“Its okay. We are going to pass through this.” Mrs. Kibali told him

“Where are we going to find a place to hide?” I asked

“ I don’t know. But we have to forge forward. We may find somewhere to hide.” He said following behind the truck. It had long disappeared in place
