Chapter 4
-Anastasia’s POV-
“Hey! I guess you know my name now. What’s yours?” The girl named Farisa patted my shoulders, dragging me from my thoughts back to reality.
“My name is Anastasia.” I showed her a shy smile. I never was treated this way before. Nobody cared if I had a name or not. They always called me a freak or anything else but my real name.
“Okay, Anastasia.” Farisa grabbed my hand but I didn’t bother to get rid of it. “The Beta asked me to show you around, so ask me anything if you want!”
Ajax was the pack’s Beta? He became a Beta in the past two years but never looked for me before.
He lived a decent life… while his younger sister lived in hell.
Good for you, Ajax.
I took a deep breath and wiped the corners of my eyes before Farisa turned to me and asked where I’d like to go.
“Nothing special….” I tried to look nice but I guessed my fake smile was not good as Farisa raised her eyebrows and giggled.
“You don’t have to fake a smile, Anastasia.” She held my arms like we were old friends. “Just be who you are.”
A flow of warmth filled my heart. I nodded at her. “Okay… can you tell me a bit about the pack?”
Her big, beautiful eyes roved around. She really looked like a pretty fox which made me want to grab her tail and rub her fur.
Oh, what a pity I couldn’t touch her wolf form now.
Just then, she lowered her voice as if we were thieves. “I bet you’ve heard rumours about our Alpha?”
I quickly nodded and was afraid someone would notice us. All werewolf packs in North America knew that Alpha Aiden had slaughtered his father to take over. Their duel had lasted for a day and a night till Aiden had bitten his father’s head off. He had also been badly wounded. That was a year ago.
“The old Alpha deserved it.” Farisa clenched her fists. “He was ruthless and cold-hearted. He treated low rank werewolves like shit. Everyone hates him.”
“Hierarchy,” I murmured silently. Hierarchy was the most rooted thing in every pack. Alpha and Beta were high ranks while Gamma and Delta were low, and Omegas were the slaves. Yes, it was the 21st century but werewolves still lived by the rules of the Middle Ages.
“So what happened next?” I swallowed and asked.
“Well, pretty much what’s happening now Alpha Aiden is in charge, taking some radical reforms to eradicate the class difference….”
“Wait. He tried to eradicate it?” My mouth was agape. “What is he, Martin Luther King for werewolves?”
I didn’t expect there would be an Alpha who was eager to root out the classes. Hierarchy was where an Alpha’s power resides. He should be the last one who wanted to change it.
“Yeah I know, he has this ‘every werewolf be equal’ ideal, which is definitely not easy. The old Alpha had supporters who refused changes. And they got too much power in hand that even Alpha Aiden can’t neglect.” Farisa sat down beside a flowerbed and pulled me to sit down. “So, it has been a year since Alpha Aiden came to power, and there is still this delicate balance between him and the Elders.’
“I kinda understand,” I murmured and could only imagine how hard it was to kill his father and get control of the whole pack. Then I heard a drum of footsteps approaching. It’s a gang of several blondes, all wearing high heels - where the drum coming from. They walked as if school was their palace.
“Speaking of the devil….” Farisa dramatically rolled her eyes as the leading blonde stepped in and blocked our path.
“Oh, here is the new girl. A Delta I recall.” Her piercing voice came from above and forced me to look up at her.
Oh man, she was tall. And hot. Definitely the type boys would chase at school.
“Afterwards, remember to bow when we meet, understand?”
“Stacy!” Farisa held her breath for a second and then pulled my sleeves and whispered her name in my ears. “She’s the daughter of the last Beta….”
“Farisa!” Stacy crossed her arms in front of her plump chest and walked to us. “Are you talking about me behind my back?”
“Of course not. You are the daughter of the FORMER Beta.” Farisa put a strong emphasis on the word ‘former’. “There is no way our low rankings dare talk about you behind your back.”
Good sarcasm, Farisa! Would she buy it?
I swore I saw steam coming out of Stacy’s delicate nose. “You think you can frighten me with that new Beta?” She scoffed. “He is nothing but a rogue, he has no position in this pack. He will be kicked out of the pack when he becomes useless….” She gave me a sly look. “Together with his rogue sister. ”
A silent growl broke through my grinding teeth and I felt Amy’s anger flooding out, giving me a strong urge to jump to this bully.
Why must I swallow this humiliation again and again?
Why couldn’t I just release my wolf and tear the bitch into pieces?
Why does the moon goddess don’t allow me to SHIFT?
Stacy must have observed my hostility. “So the Rogue wants a fight, ha?”
She lowered her body and prepared for attack. I heard an exciting growl coming out of her mouth. That’s her wolf eager for a fight. But…
“You have me on your side!” Amy clenched her jaw and growled in my mind. She was eager to scratch up the bitch’s face too. But she couldn’t.
“Relax, girl. We can’t beat her up now,” It was never late for me to take revenge back. But for now we could do nothing to her.
“What’s going on here?” A man’s voice rang out behind Stacy and my eyes went wide.
It was Alpha Aiden.
My heat pounded faster. I just picked up a fight with a high ranker. The alpha was definitely gonna punish me.
Gosh, what should I do?
